Chargers vs. Raiders

Week 1 of the NFL season will conclude with a late Monday Night Football battle between the home Raiders and the visiting Chargers. NFL odds opened this game as dead even, however now, the home Raiders are favored by -1.

The Chargers come into this game with a slightly different feel to the team compared to seasons past. It almost feels like everyone is playing for their jobs. Norv Turner was brought back much to the dismay of some Chargers faithful, but the Chargers have reloaded to some degree, and should be ready to take on the season.

One of the biggest factors contributing to the measured optimism around San Diego this season is the health of Antonio Gates. Reports out of Chargers camp is that Gates looks and feels better than he has in several years. Even though injury and age has made him lose a step, he is still going to be the most targeted receiver in the red zone for Phillip Rivers this season.

Now, if only the Chargers can keep Ryan “Glass Man,” Matthews healthy and on the field. Matthews returned to practice on Monday, catching passes out of the backfield, but he is still listed as doubtful for this game, and I would be very surprised if the Chargers put him on the field in Week 1.

The Chargers have a great shot at getting a win, despite being without their best running back. If Phillip Rivers can remain accurate and not throw interceptions, the Chargers will win this game. I like San Diego’s defense much more than Oakland’s, and I think that will be a deciding factor late in this game.

Chargers' Brown carrying big expectations

It's a question that probably swirls around constantly in the mind of Chargers' head coach Norv Turner: "What can (Ronnie) Brown do for you?" The answer better be "a lot more than we originally expected" because Brown's performance as Ryan Matthews' replacement as the starter at running back could be the difference in the Chargers playing into...

Vincent Brown Has 'Designated to Return' Tag Placed

A change in the injured reserve rule will aid a fallen Chargers receiver this year.  Prior to the rule change, when an NFL team placed a player on the Injured Reserve, they were unable to play for the entire year. Now, the new rule states that if a player has sustained an injury, he can return to the team and fully participate before week eight of the regular season. However...

2012 Week 1 Sleepers

As we count the milliseconds before Sunday’s full slate of action, it is essential that we examine the sleepers that are most likely to help fantasy owners prevail in week 1. While the sleepers in this column will be proportioned based upon the current events of each particular week, it just so happens that we currently have a preponderance of injuries to some high profile WRs...

Ryan Mathews Participates in Individual Drills Wednesday

San Diego halfback Ryan Mathews (clavicle) participated in individual drills Wednesday, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.Fantasy Spin:San Diego will hold it's first official practice Thursday. Mathews has insisted he'll be ready Week 1, but we doubt the Chargers will play him. Week 2 is an option but we don't expect him to handle a full workload...

Five Things to Watch: Helping Harris

The Chargers will kick off the regular season with a national audience watching and an undrafted rookie protecting the franchise QB’s blindside. If it sounds like a recipe for disaster, that’s because it is. Still, this is an obstacle, not a death sentence. Here is a detailed look at five ways Norv Turner & Co. will keep the offense humming and avoid another slow start.
