After signing Vince Young, the Buffalo Bills could find themselves in the middle of a quarterback controversy before the season even starts.

With Young, who said he was happy to join the team, agreeing to a one-year, $2 million deal Friday, the Buffalo Bills have a capable back-up behind starter Ryan Fitzpatrick.

"Thanks to Buddy Nix and coach (Chan) Gailey for giving me the opportunity to come in and play and compete," Young tweeted. "I am looking forward to playing with the guys and helping where I am needed. I have always respected the Bills organization and am looking forward to being a part of the team."

But what happens if Fitzpatrick starts to falter this season? There will likely be fans who will be calling for Young to take over.

However, team officials have indicated that Young will only provide competition for the backup quarterback spot, which is currently held by Tyler Thigpen. Also, the team's general manager, Buddy Nix, recently told reporters that Young knows what his role is on the team.

"It's a competition for the backup quarterback job. Not the starter," Nix said. "Obviously I've said that 100 times. (Young) knows it. That's the way it is. It's just to try to get us better."

But, when it does come to quarterback controversies, the Buffalo Bills are very familiar. During the 2000 season, the team found itself in the middle of a controversy involving quarterbacks Doug Flutie and Rob Johnson. Then, several years later, the team found itself facing another controversy involving J.P. Losman and Trent Edwards.

But, Nix said he doesn’t see another controversy happening now.

"Don't even start that,” Nix told reporters when asked about the quarterback situation. “Our second quarterback will play if something (injury-wise) happens to Ryan, whoever that is."
