The finality of the decision in the battle between Major Wright and Craig Steltz is still a number of practices and three preseason games away, but it's clear now.

Craig Steltz should be the starting strong safety for the Chicago Bears and Major Wright should be benched.  The evidence couldn't have been more clear than in the first preseason game of the season.

Major Wright flies to the football in run support, but is completely out of control when he does.  Wright has no sense of control and he easily misses his gap, his keys just his simple responsibilities in run defense.

Never mind that he takes bad angles and can't break down and come to a point to make a tackle, right is purely out of control on the football field.

Run support is vital in the Bears' defense and far too often Wright has shown he doesn't have even the simplest of run defending fundamentals under control.

Now entering his third year Major Wright should stop playing like a rookie and making the same constant mistakes in run defense that have plagued him during his first two years.

Craig Steltz is the polar opposite of Wright in run defense, he can line up attack a blocker and make a tackle.  Steltz showed this ability on more than on play during the 2011 season and only reaffirmed the solid play we saw from  him at the end of last season.

Steltz was all over the field making tackles against the Broncos and looked comfortable.

The divide between Steltz and Wright is clear and the Bears shouldn't risk the integrity of their defense as a result.

Steltz should be the starter at strong safety ahead of Wright because over the last five years he has learned how to play within himself.  Steltz is a smart heady safety who can make plays for the Bears and never gets out of control like Wright does.

Wright has three more games to earn the starting job back, but at this point the Bears should be giving all of the first team reps to Craig Steltz to give him the best opportunity to succeed as a starting strong safety for the Chicago Bears.
