In the midst of an off-season in which the focus has been on the alleged extent to which the Chiefs front office will go to maintain the veil of secrecy, the franchise is slowly inching towards a crossroads of sorts. Cornerback Brandon Carr and wide receiver Dwayne Bowe are both scheduled to become unrestricted free agents in the coming weeks and either is allowed to walk away, the Chiefs will almost assuredly find themselves shorthanded at their respective position next fall.

Bowe has established himself as an elite level receiver over the past two seasons, in spite of his propensity to forget how to catch the ball in key spots and the occasional case of “alligator arms” like the ones he displayed against the Steelers last season. It goes without saying that he would have no shortage of suitors waiting on him if the Chiefs somehow allow him to reach free agency without having a backup plan in place to ensure compensation coming back in return first, such as that which comes courtesy of the franchise tag.

Carr, on the other hand, may or may not generate the same level of interest as Bowe on the open market, but in a league that has suddenly turned pass happy, having a corner that can handles premier wide receivers is almost a prerequisite to win consistently, and any team lucky enough to lure Carr away from KC will benefit from his presence.

That leaves the Chiefs with a dilemma of sorts as they’ll be able to guarantee at least one of the two players stays in Red and Yellow next session, simply by placing the franchise tag on them and working out a long term della after, but the other could potentially be left out in the cold in the process. That said, the Chiefs have one of the largest projected cap space amounts in the league, and all signs point towards them using most if not all of it this off-season, and what better way than by locking up two Pro Bowl caliber players in their prime.

Only time will tell what Chiefs GM Scott Pioli and Co. have in mind, but given their public statements towards each player ad of late, don’t be surprised to see them both running out of the tunnel at Arrowhead Stadium next season as a member of the home team.
