Really, for as many times as he won the award this season — 5 times in 11 starts — the award should be renamed the Tim Tebow award in the future. Specifically, Tebow won the award for the shocking comeback victory against the Bears. At the time, it seemed impossible, and looking back has not changed how impossible that particular outcome seemed.

Tebow accepted the award on National television with the expected humility he has shown his entire career, a thank you to the man upstairs, and a well done moment of self mocking. In addition to Alec Baldwin Tebowing (and getting Tebow to show him how to do it properly), Katy Perry passed along a greeting from her parents, poking fun at rumors that her parents tried to set her up with Tebow. It’s good to know that he isn’t bigger than the game and can make fun of himself with the media circus that has surrounded him this season.

In addition to this award and Miller’s Defensive Rookie of the Year Award, John Fox received a nomination for Coach of the Year, though no one really had a chance against Harbaugh and the surprisingly resurgent Niners. Dumervil received a nomination for Comeback Player of the Year and was beaten out by Matthew Stafford. For a team that ended up 8-8 in the season and entered the playoffs through a surprising turn of mathematics and poor competition within the division, the Broncos were exceptionally well-represented at this gala show in Indianapolis.

My apologies, Bronco fans. Lost in the Superbowl hype and my own prep for the party today, I had only a few minutes to post an award last night and I posted Miller’s because I thought it was the more important award. But I don’t want to take anything away from Tebow. He deserved this one.
