Found December 18, 2012 on Waiting For Next Year:
I noticed an OBR thread linked on Reddit today that wondered if Brandon Weeden called his own play when he fired a laser to Travis Benjamin over the top for a 69-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter of the loss to the Redskins. The prior play, Trent Richardson missed an assignment that allowed Brandon Weeden to get blindsided violently. Weeden’s helmet came flying off and the assumption is that the audio wasn’t working. You can’t really tell for sure just by looking at the footage, but Weeden does point to his ear once. The sack led to 3rd and 7 and Travis Benjamin came into the game for Ben Watson. As they’re at the line of scrimmage, Weeden is directing traffic and calling the play at the line, as opposed to a huddle. You can see that it looks as if he’s specifically talking to and motioning to Travis Benjamin. Now, he could have just been calling what came in over his headset, I guess, but the presumption is that his headset wasn’t working. Lastly, and this is the biggest point, it appears that as Weeden gets to the sideline that Mark Whipple was yelling at him. Whipple was shaking his finger up and down. He could have been saying something like, “See? I told you if you would just trust the first read!” or he could have been saying, “That wasn’t the play we signaled in from the sidelines!” We’ll never know for sure, of course. Just found it interesting that it was a topic that seemed to be going at least a little bit viral in a Cleveland Browns way. I’m also quite positive that it will be used as evidence for Shurmur not calling a good game by those who want Shurmur gone in the worst possible way. My take? I have no idea, but the shotgun setup wasn’t dissimilar to the formation in the previous couple of plays. One thing I do know is that play was one of the few really exciting things to happen this past Sunday. If it was insurrection, I’m guessing with nothing to lose and a presumably lame duck coach, we might see more. It’s hard to imagine anyone thinks Shurmur will be back considering this speculation and also Trent Richardson’s pretty blatant public criticism of the deviated game plan.

Weeden: “I didn’t play well for the most part…”

Brandon Weeden went 21-for-35 with a TD and two interceptions. It is a mediocre line in the stat sheet, but it gets even worse when you look at the offense as a whole. The Browns punted six times, turned it over twice and also failed on two fourth down conversions. Additionally, Brandon Weeden added at least three batted passes to add to his NFL “lead” to at least 21. Brandon...

Brandon Weeden and Browns fans left looking for answers

Brandon Weeden doesn’t know. The six-foot-four-inch, rocket-armed rookie leads the NFL in batted passes by a wide margin, having added four more to his first-year resúmé in his most recent loss. Said to have been mature beyond his class, having leadership qualities unparalleled, Weeden is nearing 30 years of age. But what he has in measurables and intangibles, he lacks in instinct...

NFL Rumors: Ryan Mallett to replace Brandon Weeden?

Greg Bedard is at it again. The Boston Globe reporter who set the Internet ablaze with his sourced report regarding the possibility of Nick Saban joining Mike Lombardi in Cleveland has shifted gears. In his latest, putting together a mosaic of items from ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi and the Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot, Bedard reports that if Josh McDaniels is in fact the next...

Broncos were reportedly prepared to draft Brandon Weeden

When the Denver Broncos chose to go with Peyton Manning as their quarterback of the near future over Tim Tebow, very few questioned their decision. While Tebow had just led Denver on an improbable run to the divisional round of the playoffs, Manning is a future Hall of Famer who has already won a Super Bowl. Opportunities like that don’t come around all that often for a franchise...

Weeden takes a step back in Browns' loss

CLEVELAND In a battle of two rookie quarterbacks, the fourth-round pick clearly out played the first-round pick. The Redskins Kirk Cousins, a fourth-round draft pick from Michigan State, made his first start in place of Robert Griffin III and led his team to a 38-21 victory over the Browns. Coach (Mike)Shanahan put him in a great spot, Brandon Weeden said. (The Redskins) tailor...

In an alternative universe, Brandon Weeden signed with the Yankees years ago

And today, the Giants don't need him to beat Washington. Thus, if the Browns beat the Redskins, through an incredible loophole of irony, New York fans will have benefited from Weeden's choice not to go to NY.Leaving us all to wonder:In that alternative universe where Drew Henson said no to George, what team does Derek Jeter now play for? And is Justin Bieber a girl?

Cleveland Browns Game 14: Winners and Losers

What we think will happen today vs. the Redskins (Week 15)

Cleveland Browns vs. Washington Redskins (Week 15) December 16, 2012 Brian  Browns 23 Redskins 20 I constantly watch RG3 and mourn that the Browns couldn't pull off a trade for the magnificent QB. However, I truly don't know if his body will hold out longer than Brandon Weeden's. Oh well, RG3 or not, I am as excited for...

While We’re Waiting… Who will save Cleveland?

“But in Cleveland, Irving has an opportunity to be everything sports fans are seeking in the long-term. They’re seeking someone upon whom they can rely, someone to save the city from its recent run of sports mediocrity. These days, “wait until next year” no longer means challenging for a championship, or even a playoff spot, in Cleveland. It’s more like dreaming of maybe...

NFL Coroner's Report: Cleveland Browns Autopsy

Before Week 15, there were eight victims of the NFL grind, and with arguable exceptions, they were all declared 'dead men walking' quite some time ago. After Week 15's slate of games, there would be another quartet of lifeless masses heaped upon the Football Nation Morgue, all with just a smidgen more optimism than that original group of tagged-and-bagged cases. As these...
