The Eagles have tried to use Chad Hall as a hybrid type of player in their offense. University of Florida running back Chris Rainey projects to have the same type of role in the NFL and the Eagles seem to think he could be an option for them, bringing Rainey in for a private workout.

At 5-8 and 180 pounds, Rainey is by no means a big guy. Chad Hall actually has seven pounds on him as he’s listed on the Eagles official website (of course that may or may not be accurate).

Despite his small stature, Rainey seems to be a very tough player. On film, you can see him really get beat up. However, he never seemed to miss a beat or slow down.

Rainey has big play ability every time he touches the ball. He is shifty and has very good straight line speed, being clocked in the 4.3s in the 40-yard dash.

One thing I tried to watch closely when looking at Rainey was how he ran between the tackles and I was actually impressed. His bread and butter is running off tackle, but he was successful run up the middle as well. He is hard to see behind the line and hits the hole before defenders know he is coming.

Of course, he is most impressive in the open field. He has this impressive ability to slightly change direction and just blow by defenders. Once he gets into space, he’s extremely difficult to run down with his sprinter’s speed.

From what I’ve seen, he doesn’t have elite hands out of the backfield but he’s serviceable. I think this is something he’ll need to work on when he enters the league because whoever drafts him will rely heavily on him making plays out of the backfield as a receiver.

Rainey simply isn’t cut out to be an every down back in the NFL. He simply doesn’t have the frame to support it. However, he has a large amount of talent that will benefit an offense somewhere.

As mentioned, the Eagles decided to have a private workout with Rainey. I bet they threw him a ton of passes during that workout. I’d also go out on a limb and say they probably made him field a number of punts and kickoffs. He put in some work as a return guy at Florida, and I think the Eagles would have interest in him taking on some of those duties for them.

Although many fans seemed to question it, the Eagles weren’t willing to give up working Chad Hall into their offense. I think Rainey has a lot more playmaking ability and would be a much better option for these type of sets.

Rainey projects as a fourth round pick, so don’t look for the Eagles to take him before the final day. The Eagles already have a ton of playmakers on their offense and bringing in Rainey would add another one. These type of guys are ones you can never have enough of.
