Jeffrey Lurie gave his state of the Eagles address yesterday afternoon before the Eagles concluded a 4-0 preseason with a 28-10 win over the Jets. Lurie’s annual address was hotly anticipated in light of some recent events.

Many Eagles fans have been wondering if there is no improvement over last season’s disappointing 8-8 season if coach Andy Reid would keep his job. Many wondered if Reid could do anything to lose his job, or if he’d be given a pass this season because ot the death of his son. This was further compounded by a statement by Andy Reid’s agent not even a week after Garrett’s death. Bob LaMonte, Reid’s agent, blew into town while the team was still hunkered down at Lehigh University to announce that he and Jeffrey Lurie had numerous conversations in which the Eagles owner came out and told LaMonte that as long as he owned the team, Reid would be his coach.

Within an hour, Jeffrey Lurie released a statement to the press saying that Reid, like all other players and executives would be evaluated at season’s end. The point of Lurie’s statement was to make it clear that Reid was not the coach for life… Or at least Lurie wasn’t willing to give up that leverage publicly.

Yesterday, Jeffrey Lurie reiterated that Reid would be evaluated at season’s end. He went way out of his way to make the point that another 8-8 season with Reid as the coach would not lead to another season in the job OR a contract extension.

So there you have it. If you believe Lurie’s words, another mediocre season will spell the end of Andy Reid as coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, barring significant injuries to key players, of course. Reid will not be given a pass, and he is certainly not the coach for life. In other words, Reid is coaching for his job this year.

Those are words I never thought I’d hear.
