Queen City Sports:
The Buffalo Bills rebounded from a heartbreaking loss to the New England Patriots with a comeback of their own against the Carolina Panthers.
With 1:38 remaining in the game, the Buffalo Bills found themselves losing 23-17. It was E.J. Manuel’s first chance to win a game in a two-minute offense and he didn’t disappoint. The drive started with a completion to Stevie Johnson for eight yards.
His next three passes were all intended for running backs. C.J. Spiller took a reception 12 yards and Fred Jackson followed that up with a 14 yard reception. The next throw, also intended for Jackson, was thrown in an area where Jackson would have gained minimal yards. Instead of catching the ball, Jackson made the smartest move of the drive by intentionally dropping the ball. The incomplete pass left 40 seconds on the clock.
Manuel looking very calm found Johnson for another 11 yard gain, before throwing a pass off of C.J. Spiller’s hands. The ball flew high into the air and being a Bills fan, I assumed the ball was destined to be intercepted. Instead, the ball fell harmlessly to the ground. Manuel came back to Spiller for a four yard gain before one of the biggest plays of the drive.
On 3rd and 6, Manuel threw a deep pass intended for Stevie Johnson. The ball was intercepted by Colin Jones and the ball game was seemingly over. Instead, a late flag flew in and defensive pass interference was the call. Buffalo had the ball back in their hands on Carolina’s 11 yard line with 14 seconds remaining.
Manuel took the snap from the 11 and had two Panthers players rushing towards him. Using his elusiveness, Manuel avoided the rush and scrambled with the ball. Manuel tried to score the touchdown on his own, but he was knocked out of bounds at the two yard line. It was a gutsy run by Buffalo’s quarterback that set the Bills up at the 2 yard line with six seconds remaining.
You know the rest. On Manuel’s next snap, there was a miscommunication in Carolina’s secondary. Believing Chris Hogan was Manuel’s target on the play, somehow Stevie Johnson, Buffalo’s number one receiver, found himself wide open in the left corner of the end zone. Manuel completed the throw and one extra point later, the Bills took the lead 24-23.
Manuel celebrated by hugging his father and crying. It was a special moment between a father and son that football fans were able to see up close. Buffalo’s defense shut the door on any miracle play by the Panthers and Buffalo moved to 1-1 on the season.
Buffalo still has work to do as they prepare to play the New York Jets next Sunday. Colin Brown is struggling mightily at left guard and the team’s secondary is still banged up. Buffalo itself is still looking undisciplined as the team suffered another seven penalties on Sunday. The list could go on, but it didn’t matter on Sunday because the Bills won.
All thanks to E.J. Manuel and the Bills’ flair for the dramatic.
