As if sitting there dejected during the entire first round on Thursday weren't enough, West Virginia's Geno Smith, arguably the top, if not of of the best quarterbacks in the draft, was finally selected 39th overall in the second round by none other than the New York Jets. The Jets' cruelty seems to have no bounds. Geno probably wished he kept to his original decision to go home after the first round. After all but irreparably damaging the career of Tim Tebow and what's left of Mark Sanchez's, they'll bring in another quarter back into the circus. Most see the selection as the end of Mark's tenure in New York, but not so fast, says Jets GM John Izdik. “What this means for Mark is competition,” he said, via ProFootballTalk.com. “There are plans to let him compete...” Thos might be their public plans, but they already have a plan to cut Sanchez in the works, reported ESPN's Adam Schefter. In cutting Sanchez, the team will swallow a lot of money, $8.25 million in guaranteed money. He'll also carry the heavy cap hit of roughly $12.35 million, which will add to the cap charge from the Darrelle Revis trade. "20 percent of the salary cap devoted to two players no longer on the team," writes ESPN's Rich Cimini. That's a tough one to swallow for two players not even of the team. Looks like the mess in New York just got a lot messier, and poor rookie Geno Smith finds himself right in the middle of it.
