East Bay native Taiwan Jones was drafted by his hometown Oakland Raiders to become a change of pace running back. It became obvious to many that Jones would don the silver and black uniform of the Raiders because of Al Davis’ love for lightning speed. The former track star never found his bearings as an NFL running back so Reggie McKenzie decided to switch him to cornerback. During the preseason, Jones looked like he had the potential to be a future nickel back in this league. However, the real reason he is still on the Raiders roster is his stellar special teams play. Jones’ freakish athletic ability translates well to the special teams unit where Jones is able to get to the returner in a blink of an eye. Even though Jones is better off as a cornerback/special teams ace, the Raiders should still find a way to use him in offensive packages. The Raiders have given the ball to Jones once this season on a fake punt. On that fake punt play, Jones used his speed to run the ball 19 yards for a first down. Hopefully, offensive coordinator Greg Olson has used the bye week to figure out a way to use Jones in his offense. It has been frustrating to watch the Raiders try to run the ball behind the awful offensive line. For some reason the Raiders are continuing to call up the middle runs for Darren McFadden. Using Jones in special packages would allow the Raiders to get some outside runs that could gain some decent yardage. During tonight’s Panthers game, Cam Newton faked the read option to Mike Tolbert and tossed it to Deangelo Williams who gained the edge. The Raiders could use a similar strategy with Pryor, McFadden and Jones in the backfield.   You can follow Jorge on twitter @jraycontreras or add him to your network on google Jorge is the co-founder of  Football and Futbol , Bay Sports Report , Cascadia Sports , Sports Report So Cal and Sports Report Arizona

Raiders Sign Martez Wilson: What Does He Bring to Oakland?

The Raiders announced late last evening that they had signed OLB Martez Wilson, recently cut by the Saints so they could sign QB Ryan Griffin, and waived DT Christo Bilukidi. Bilukidi’s cut comes as a surprise after being drafted in the sixth round last year by McKenzie. Reggie has shown a tendency to cut players, even those that he drafted, if it means that the team is improving...

Oakland Raiders Need to Get the Ball to Mychal Rivera

The Oakland Raiders come of their bye week at 2-4 but they face four straight winnable games against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants and Houston Texans. On paper, the Raiders could still be in the playoff picture after the four game stint but their opponents all have a great pass rush which is the Raiders greatest weakness. In order for the...

Where does JaMarcus Russell stand in his comeback bid?

JaMarcus Russell still isn’t ready for the NFL. That much seems clear after Jeff Garcia, who helped get Russell into shape over the summer, said that Russell was set back by his $3 million settlement with the Oakland Raiders. "When he got that settlement from Oakland, that $3 million dollar-plus settlement, I think things got soft again," Garcia said via

Sims looks forward to facing Roethlisberger

Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Pat Sims knows how difficult it is to sack Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. For five years the former Cincinnati Bengal tried, mostly in vain, to get Roethlisberger down. In eight games against the 6-foot-5 quarterback, Sims had 1 1-2 sacks and watched as Big Ben led Pittsburgh to a trio of playoff berths. Roethlisberger's been sacked...

Raiders' Terrelle Pryor set to face childhood team

Terrelle Pryor grew up in Jeannette Pa. a big Steelers fan and a big Ben Roethlisberger fan. On Sunday the Raiders' young quarterback will "play against guys I looked up to and guys that were role models to me." And to hear him tell it he was almost a teammate to those Steelers. Pryor told Pittsburgh reporters in a conference call that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin...

Steelers Considered Raiders QB Terrelle Pryor In The 2011 Supplemental Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers have never drafted a player in the supplemental draft, but Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor very likely could have been the first back in 2011 had the Ohio State product not declined the offer from head coach Mike Tomlin to do just that. "Mike said, 'Hey, I’ll draft you if you want to play here.' ", said Pryor during his Wednesday...

Raiders Claim LB Martez Wilson Off Waivers From The Saints

The Oakland Raiders claimed LB Martez Wilson off of waivers from the Saints on Wednesday. Oakland subsequently released DE Christo Bilukidi to make room for Wilson on their active roster.
