Heels in the Pro’s: Hakeem NicksWhile there is plenty of good games on the slate for the second week of the National Football League, the one I am most interested in is the match up that will be played at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado. Most of the media have dubbed it “The Manning Bowl”, but to me, who follows UNC Football and the players that go onto the next level, the key one that I will be focusing one is… Hakeem Nicks. Coming off a seven touchdown performance the older of the Manning is looking to show that he still has it and will be airing it out for the Broncos. To keep up Eli will have to do the same with his Giants, meaning he will look to his core of receivers, headed by Victor Cruz and Nicks, to step up and get the job done. While most of the talk was about what Peyton did against the defending Super Bowl champions Baltimore Ravens, few might have noticed that in a loss to Big D the younger brother hit three receivers for 100 or more yards. That is something that the New York franchise has never done before last Sunday. Hakeem NicksIn an article from the New York Daily News Cruz said that the former UNC Football wide receiver is the number one wide out for the squad, explaining that Nicks’ speed was what made the offense flow for Big Blue. With the way the Giants’ running game has been looking, along with the probability that Victor Cruz, who scored three touchdowns last week, could be double teamed the whole sixty minutes, Nicks has to be ready to step up and make the plays needed. If he does not his squad could find themselves down 0 and 2 to start the season, not something that the squad would want in a tight division like the NFC East. Many former Heels will be in action tomorrow, but the one I am most interested will be Nicks, as he will be part of the most talked about match up, at least pre-game, for Week 2 of the NFL. If that was to be the case, with the way the Big Apple media as been with Tom Coughlin, could we be once again hearing about him losing his job? During next week I will talk about what Nicks and the other players that once called Kenan Stadium home, so make sure to check out the blog often. But for now let’s enjoy the night time games in college football.
