The Houston Texans suffered their first season ending injury of the season as second-year nose tackle Sonny Harris went down with a torn triceps injury during Tuesday’s practice that will land him on IR. Harris, who formally played with the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers, hasn’t seen much playing time in his NFL career (two games, two tackles), but the Texans were counting on him to possibly add depth to their interior defensive line.

Harris’ injury now puts on the Texans in a real conundrum at NT. The team is already missing starting NT Shaun Cody and now only have two NTs remaining: Earl Mitchell and undrafted rookie Hebron Fangupo. Mitchell rotates with Cody on a regular basis, Fangupo has never taken a NFL regular season snap.

The solution, for the time being, is to try defensive ends Jared Crick and Tim Jamison at nose, according to defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. The Texans can probably get away with rotating Crick and Jamison in at NT, but must be aware of the situational circumstance because neither is a wide, gap consuming D-lineman that is required of a 3-4 nose. Until Cody recovers, Crick and Jamison will probably be seen a fair amount on obvious passing downs (2nd or 3rd and long) while Mitchell and Fangupo will be in during any other situation.

In the near future, the Texans will probably begin to scour the list of free agents in search of a big body to plug in at NT. In the meantime, the team will have to get by with a very shallow group heading into Saturday’s third preseason game with the New Orleans Saints.
