Indianapolis Colts receiver Austin Collie was injured in the third quarter of the Colt’s 22-17 loss to Jacksonville Sunday and did not return. Initially, it seemed as though he had sustained yet another concussion because the injury came as he was making a catch for a six-yard gain, and he took a shot to the head. . After the hit, he stayed down with little movement, eerily similar to the other concussions he has sustained while playing in the NFL. However, as he was helped off the field, he wasn’t putting weight on his right leg, and it has been revealed that the fourth-year receiver is out for the season with a ruptured patella tendon.

That’s not to say he wasn’t also concussed on the play as well. Collie has had three (or four depending on whom you ask) major concussions in his last two seasons with the Colts, missing extended time for each of them. His most recent concussion was August 20 in a preseason game. He did not play again until this Sunday.

Collie is a fourth-year receiver with 173 career receptions and 16 touchdowns, all for the Colts.

The injury is not concussion-related, so the reigning conspiracy theory that he faked the leg injury in order to avoid more concussion issues with the team and fans is most likely false. And also a little insensitive to a guy who has had his once-promising career completely derailed by concussions and other injuries.

Colts fans seemed reticent to watch the guy play again after three (and maybe four) concussions in two years already. And even though this injury is mercifully to some other part of his body, this most likely ends his tenure with the Colts and possibly his career as well. Few teams will want to take a risk on such a concussion and injury-prone wide receiver.

He may yet make it back to the NFL, and maybe even with the Colts. But this is the last you’ll see of Austin Collie in 2012 at the very least.
