What It Means- The Dallas Cowboys fall to 2-3 on the season after allowing 517 total yards and 51 points in a shootout vs. the Denver Broncos. The Cowboys have never made the playoffs with this poor of a start since Jerry Jones took over the team. The difference in the game was a Tony Romo interception with 1:57 remaining, ruining what was undoubtedly one the best, if not the best game of his career. He finished with 506 yards through the air, a franchise record. But once again, it was his catastrophic mistake that trumped his huge statistical day negating the Cowboys chance to knock off the undefeated Broncos. Peyton Manning was able to run out the clock to set up the game winning FG after executing on two first down plays. The Cowboys could have had a chance to get the ball back, but Jason Garrett made a huge game management error. By not allowing the Broncos to score, Garrett basically helped seal his own team’s fate. Had Garrett let the Broncos walk in the end zone, Romo might have had another chance to vindicate his typical late game gaffe. Monte Kiffin’s Honeymoon Over- The Cowboys defense has now given up 81 points in their past two contests. Kiffin was brought in to change the defense, and it just hasn’t happened. The 51 points allowed by the defense are the most points ever allowed in a home game in the team’s history. The Cowboys did pick off Peyton Manning for his first interception of the season, and also added a fumble recovery but the turnovers, in the end, didn’t help. Kiffin’s unit had no answer for Manning all day and it’s the second consecutive game they have allowed over 500 yards. Wherever he watched the game, Rob Ryan sure is smiling. Aerial Attack- Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, and Jason Witten all had over 100 yards receiving and a score in what was a great day for the offense. Before Romo’s game-ending interception, the unit was able to have their way with the Broncos secondary. But, once again, it was not enough. What’s Next- The Cowboys host the Washington Redskins on Sunday Night Football in their second division game of the season. The Cowboys are 1-0 in the NFC East. The Washington Redskins swept the season series with the ‘Boys last year.
