In spite of expectations to the contrary, it seems that wide receiver DeSean Jackson will quickly sign the franchise tag offer tendered by the Eagles earlier today, guaranteeing himself a one year contract worth an estimated $9.5 million in the process, and foregoing a chance to sign a lucrative long term deal on the open market.

Tim McManus of 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia first reported the news that Jackson would take the Eagles up on their offer as soon as possible, and while it may make some sense financially for this season, it’s a strange move considering how adamant Jackson has been in wanting Philadelphia to not use the tag on him this off-season.

The decision to accept the franchise tender may be an effort on the part of Jackson and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to show he’s reformed into more of a team player, and then earn himself a major contract next year as a result. Or it could very well be a sincere gesture on Jackson’s part, trying to accept responsibility for his problematic behavior on and off the field, and prove his worth to the Eagles with one more season of electrifying plays.

Whatever the case may be, fans in Philadelphia are almost certain to see Jackson on the field for at least one more year, and while it may not be the end of the problems associated with him, his willingness to stay put instead of forcing his way out bodes well for the 2012 campaign.
