Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell made a huge emphasis in year one on rebuilding the Jaguars’ secondary. Though the verdict is still out, it seems that Caldwell has found a nice gem in safety Johnathan Cyprien. This year, in free agency, he made a huge emphasis on the pass rush. Notice I said pass rush, not defensive line. The defensive tackle position is one that still needs some attention, specifically the one-tech defensive tackle spot, currently occupied by Roy Miller. Miller however, had an unproductive season in 2013 to say the least. Re-signing Sen’Derrick Marks was without a doubt a great move by Caldwell and company as Marks had better stats by season’s end in 2013, than he had had his entire four-year career which was spent with the Tennessee Titans. However, there were several times last season was gassed and needed relief, relief that wasn’t there until the signing of Ziggy Hood in free agency. At defensive end, it’s a whole new game. You have run stuffers in Red Bryant and Tyson Alualu who will split snaps on one side, and on the other, you’ve got a good rotation in Chris Clemons, Ryan Davis, Andre Branch and Chris Smith who the Jaguars drafted in the 2014 NFL draft. Jason Babin appears to no longer be apart of the equation. Jaguars have released DE Jason Babin. — John Oehser (@JohnOehser) June 19, 2014 Yes, Babin led the team in 2013 in sacks with 7.5, but Babin also is 34 years old in a crowded position full of younger guys. Guys who, apparently the Jaguars are willing to take a chance on. To some, this may be a surprise, but to many of us, it wasn’t a matter of if, but when as the team has released Babin once already this offseason before re-signing him to a less lucrative three-year contract.
