cover32 - Jaguars:
Last season, we saw the cornerback position and really, the entire secondary go through a major overhaul under first-year general manager David Caldwell. In free agency, Caldwell added Will Blackmon, one of head coach Gus Bradley’s former players in Seattle, and Alan Ball. Jamell Fleming was claimed off waivers in the early part of last season while Dwayne Gratz, Demetrius McCray and Jeremy Harris were drafted by Caldwell.
Mike Harris is the lone ranger from the old Jaguars’ regime. Harris was taken in the sixth-round of the 2012 draft out of Florida State and as a rookie, played in 15 total games and started in the last five of the season. In 2013, while Harris saw playing time each and every week, he only started twice, but has made some contributions on special teams as well. Blackmon is also a great special teams contributor and someone will really have an impact next season.
Originally drafted in the seventh-round of the 2007 draft, Ball has the versatility to play both cornerback and safety. In his first year with the Jaguars and seventh in the league, Ball led the team in deflected passes with 14 and had a career-high 47 tackles. He started each of the 15 games that he played in and matched a career record in interceptions with two.
The Jaguars secondary is young and as head coach Gus Bradley encourages, “getting better everyday.”
For that reason, I don’t expect the Jaguars to use an early round pick to select one of the top-10 cornerbacks in the 2014 NFL draft. That said, the fact that the team went after Walter Thurmond III in free agency tells me they are looking to add another corner or two.

With so many questions about the top tier quarterbacks in the upcoming NFL Draft it should come as no surprise that needy teams are floating the idea of passing on the position in the first round.
While it’s likely more than one of these teams are bluffing it does bring attention to second day players such as Pitt’s Tom Savage and Jimmy Garoppolo of Eastern Illinois.
