While most of the attention today was up in Florham Park as the New York Jets held a press conference to their new backup QB, there was another organization lamenting over their failed attempt to land Tim Tebow.

Shad Khan, the new owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, wants everyone to know, especially the fans and potential season ticket-holders for the Jags, that Tebow had no desire for a homecoming.

“That would have been the worst thing for Jacksonville and the worst thing for him,” Jaguars owner Shad Khan told the Times-Union at the NFL’s annual league meetings. “He didn’t want to come, obviously. … Any one of the 53 players we have, have to be committed to Jacksonville, making us be the best team we are. The question was: Did he want to come? And if the decision had been taken out [of his hands] and we got him, that would not be good for him, or for us.”

Tebow pretty much confirmed this in his press conference today as he informed the media contingency that while Denver had all the power to do what they wanted with him, they listened to his opinion and his desire to play for Rex Ryan and Tony Sparano.

The Jags actually offered to pay more of the contract than the Jets offered, but at the end of the day, they weren’t wanted by the hometown boy.

Khan understood what Tebow meant to the community around there, as he played high school football in the area for Nease HIgh and then would go onto Florida to be a Heisman Trophy and National Title winner. It has been estimated that Tebow would have been worth about 10k-20k in season tickets if he returned home. Khan was trying to please the fans, and was willing to meet the Broncos price and more, but in the end it wasn’t about that.

Similar to how teams that inquired but lost out on Peyton Manning, the QB that took Tim Tebow’s starting job in Denver, Khan has to give reassurance to his own quarterbacks.

“We were not going to say coming in, ‘He’s slotted at whatever,’” Khan said. “We have two quarterbacks now that we’re committed to. He would have to compete with them.”

That is just a ringing endorsement to Chad Henne (who once called out Tebow) and 2nd year QB Blaine Gabbert. ‘We didn’t get the guy we wanted, but these are our guys!’ I am sure that’s how they feel.
