These Guns are on Their Way to Gang Green

LaRon Landry and his massive pipes are coming to the Big Apple. The Jets, who’ve been scarily silent this offseason, snatched up the former ‘Skins safety on a one-year deal. The move comes as the pool of available safeties all but evaporated in front of their eyes. So, what to make of it? Not much.

Safety is a position of need for the Jets. The only known returning quantity is Eric Smith. Interestingly, he along with Wayne Hunter and Matty Mulligan were the three individuals whom I prayed to the football g-ds would never have to be seen in a Jets uniform again. My thanks to those above for at least granting our Mulligan wish.

In that sense, Landry helps. Unfortunately, this is not 2007-08 LaRon Landry. This is hasn’t-played-a-full-season-in-a-while LaRon who’s never seemed to fully come around from an Achilles injury that ended his 2010 season. There’s no question that he’s a physical specimen. At his best, he can be an intimidating run stopper and not-a-complete-liability in the passing game. The other end of the spectrum is a past-his-prime former first-rounder whose body is breaking down, can’t cover anybody and is unable to stay on the field.

Hence, the one-year deal. Expect the Jets to try to address safety in the April draft as well. For now, enjoy two front-row tickets to the gun show, Jets fans. We’ll have to see how much is left in the chamber.
