Former San Diego Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips was one of the highest ranked defensive free agents on the market.
After nine seasons in San Diego and playing for some very talented teams, the air finally came out of the balloon in 2012, and a housecleaning was in effect.
The versatile Phillips was looking for a new home, and while the Denver Broncos initially focused on Dwight Freeney and John Abraham, their salary demands drove the team away.
However, those circumstances lead the Broncos to look into Phillips and signed him quickly. In hindsight, Phillips was a better fit than either Freeney or Abraham, both are one dimension pass rushers, but in Phillips you get the whole package.
He can cover tight ends, play against the run and rush the passer. Once the Broncos saw him work in their system they knew they made the right choice.
As for Phillips, Denver was the only logical place to land for his skill set and he’s happy that he’s back playing for a contender; he’s made his money, but wants a shot a championship.
"At this point in my career, I've made some money. I've done that," Phillips said, via Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post.
"So it was really just down to do you go to the team that pays you the most money and you have a miserable season? Or do you go to a team that will take care of you and give you a chance to win?
"I've played nine years. I've been to the Pro Bowl, played in the AFC championship, but I haven't played in a Super Bowl.
I want to play and have a chance to win a Super Bowl. You're not going to have that chance if you're the miserable guy in a miserable situation wondering when the season is going to be over. That's not what I'm about."
"But after about five minutes in this building, I knew this was the spot, just the guys they have around here, guys that want to win. I've called it a no-brainer, because if I didn't sign here it probably meant I lost my mind."
