Found February 21, 2012 on The Rap Sheet:
The Patriots will be heading to the NFL Combine tomorrow, narrowing and widening their focus on the 2012 draft. They will be looking for offensive line help, with possible eyeballs on guards and on centers. Just wanted to throw out one quick tidbit that should help when figuring out the Patriots offensive line going forward. And it involves one of the most talked-about rookies. Marcus Cannon, who beat cancer and was a late-season addition for depth, will be considered a tackle, not a guard, moving forward, I’m told. This isn’t exactly breaking news or anything, and we won’t have to stop the imaginary presses. But Cannon’s intrigue continued all year, beginning when he slipped in the draft from a second-round talent to a fifth-round gamble because of his health situation. Fingers crossed, it worked out well. He was activated on Nov. 16 and ending up filling in at tackle when needed this season. And while he was a little rusty, the raw talent was there. (more…)

Tom Brady and Gisele are vacationing with Wes Welker in Costa Rica

Remember how Gisele ripped the Patriots receivers for their inability to catch passes in the Super Bowl? (Of course you do.) She never mentioned any names, but everybody knew one of the people she was throwing under the bus was Wes Welker, who notably dropped a pass that probably would have sealed a Patriots victory. Welker owned up to the drop, while unnamed Patriots criticized...

Patriots, Welker still talking; franchise tag likely

With multiple seasons of high-end production under his belt , wide receiver Wes Welker is rightfully pushing for a new long term deal from the Patriots, and while it looks for the time being that such a deal isn’t forthcoming any time soon, the franchise tag could give him a hefty salary this season at the very least. According to Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald, a source close...

What is the most telling development in the Wes Welker contract situation? Maybe it’s…

Much will be written about Patriots WR Wes Welker’s contract situation, and much already has. There will be speculation and more speculation, and it’s happening now. The truth is, even the participants don’t know how it will play out. Will Welker get a long-term deal? The franchise tag? The chance to test the free agent waters with the Patriots hoping he returns? Who knows...

Patriots LB Brandon Spikes underwent successful surgery on his right knee

Earlier this morning, at around 6:30 am, Patriots LB Brandon Spikes tweeted that he was having surgery. We covered that here, but had no specifics. We do now. I’m told by a source that Spikes underwent surgery on his right knee earlier today. The point as to clean out some cartilage, and a source said it “went very well.” This is the same knee Spikes injured earlier in the...

Ray Rice Headlines Strong Group of Free Agent Running Backs, Peyton Hillis Might Fit With Patriots in Right Situation

Editor's note: Jeff Howe will preview each position in free agency every day through Feb. 28. This edition highlights the running backs. The Patriots have been in a consistent transitional period at running back for several seasons, and it could continue in some fashion in 2012. In the last two years, the Patriots have parted with Laurence Maroney, Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris...

Agnosticism Toward The NFL

A long-time New England Patriots fan - and a friend of mine (justifiably) - had very strong feelings about the Super Bowl. After the big game, he described the loss as “(It was like) getting over a rape and PTSD. Then my persecutor returned a few years later and assaulted me on National Television yet again.” Certainly, in no context are such feelings healthy or admirable. It...
