Martellus Bennett is all about the analogies this week. After catching the game-winning touchdown Sunday against Minnesota, the Chicago Bears tight end likened his moves on the field to those of Muhammad Ali. It was a bold comparison, but athletes comparing themselves to other athletes is nothing new. Bennett’s description of head coach Marc Trestman on Thursday was a little … different. “I think me and Coach Trestman are probably the only two people who understand each other,” Bennett told Chicago’s ESPN Radio 1000. “I always say Coach Trestman reminds me of the first Willy Wonka. Not the Johnny Depp one. The Johnny Depp one was really cool, but the first one before that, the 1943 version.” Bennett was referring to the Gene Wilder version of the film, which was actually released in 1971. “He’s a genius,” Bennett said of Trestman. “A lot of times when you’re around really, really smart people, you don’t really understand them. “I thought Willy Wonka was brilliant. He had all kinds of candy. Who doesn’t like chocolate and candies? Everybody wanted a Gobstopper. I just think he’s brilliant.” But perhaps even more surprising than a player’s comparison of his coach to a fictional candy magnate is the fact that Trestman, during his 57 years on this earth, has never seen Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. “I wouldn’t know who Willy Wonka is, quite frankly,” Trestman told ESPN.com’s Michael C. Wright after hearing of Bennett’s interview. “I would bet it’s … umm … Martellus is from a different place.” Sorry, coach. That’s just a shame.
