Mike Brown, Allen Hurns need to take advantage of current opportunity in front of them

A few weeks ago, our very own Justin Lemminn did a nice piece on the outlook of the wide receiver position for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The big question as we find ourselves in the middle of organized team activities before we move along to mandatory mini-camp in the next few weeks is, who will take the last spot or two on the 53-man roster at wide receiver? Most presume that the the depth chart currently looks like this: 1. Cecil Shorts III 2. Marqise Lee 3. Allen Robinson 4. Ace Sanders 5. ??? 6. ??? No one really knows just yet who will fill those last one or two spots. In his debut article with us where he predicted the final 53-man roster, Chris Dougherty has Tandon Doss and Mike Brown taking the fifth and sixth spot, respectively. In my eyes, Allen Hurns is a big wild-card at play here. Hurns comes from the University of Miami where he played under current Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, giving him a small advantage over Tandon Doss who was a free-agent acquisition and doesn’t know what Fisch’s offense is like. Speaking of Doss, he already has one strike against him as he was arrested but not charged earlier in the off-season due to getting into a physical altercation. The way I see it, you’ve got Hurns, Doss, Brown and Damian Copeland competing for one, maybe two spots on the final roster and a spot on the practice squad. For these four guys, getting reps in practice and OTA’s isn’t always easy, until now. #jaguars WR Allen Robinson out with a hamstring … could be a few weeks — John Oehser (@JohnOehser) June 2, 2014 Robinson, a second-round draft pick in the 2014 draft who has yet to sign his contact, will miss the new few weeks as he deals with a hamstring injury. While Lee claims that he is ’100 percent’ healthy, not only is he coming off a left knee injury that he suffered in college, but he is also jammed his wrist during last week’s OTA’s. Lee also admitted to suffering injuries to his shoulder and his shin during last season while at playing for the USC Trojans. With ‘Fire and Ice’ as the rookie duo has named themselves, sidelined with injuries, there is a big opportunity at hand for for Hurns, Brown, Doss and Copeland to show the coaching staff what they can do. The time for them to step up to the plate is now. Me personally, I think that the fifth spot will go to Doss and I think that if the team decides to keep six receivers, that last spot goes to Hurns. I definitely expect the team to carry a wideout on the practice squad, Brown being the guy if they keep six on the roster. Copeland I don’t think has a chance unless he truly impresses the coaches. While yes, Brown has been with the team for the past few years and has contributed to an offense that struggled to have any kind of consistency, there is now better talent at the wide receiver position. Brown is college quarterback who switched position because his talents will take him further at wide receiver. He was a workout player a few years ago who made the team after impressing the coaches, much like running back Beau Blankenship has done so far. The next few weeks will be important for Lee and Robinson to heal for the long season that awaits them, but for guys like Mike Brown and Allen Hurns, it’s time to get to work and fight for their job.
