PLAYERS: Kurt Warner

Via NESN:

Right or wrong, the majority of folks in this country don't like having other people's faith jammed down their throats. Even an outspoken Christian like Kurt Warner knows that.

That's why the retired Warner, 40, offered a bit of advice to Tim Tebow, who's been at the center of an ongoing debate around the country, both for his merits as a football player and his ubiquitous mentions of his faith in God.

"I'd tell him, 'Put down the boldness in regards to the words, and keep living the way you're living. Let your teammates do the talking for you. Let them cheer on your testimony,'" Warner told Dan Bickley of The Arizona Republic, regarding advice he'd give to Tebow. "I know what he's going through, and I know what he wants to accomplish, but I don't want anybody to become calloused toward Tim because they don't understand him, or are not fully aware of who he is. And you're starting to see that a little bit."

You certainly are, with former quarterback Jake Plummer stating on the record the feelings that many fans shout in bars and living rooms across the country. While Plummer's assessment that Tebow should "shut up" might have been strong, the comments and ensuing discussions proved that it's a touchy subject whenever religion gets involved with sports.

Warner knows that himself, which is why he believes Tebow should tone down his public statements of faith.

"There's almost a faith cliche, where [athletes] come out and say, 'I want to thank my Lord and savior,'" Warner told the newspaper. "As soon as you say that, the guard goes up, the walls go up, and I came to realize you have to be more strategic.

"The greatest impact you can have on people is never what you say, but how you live," Warner added. "When you speak and represent the person of Jesus Christ in all actions of your life, people are drawn to that. You set the standard with your actions. The words can come after."

Tebow, 24, likely reveres Warner a great deal, if only because he seems to revere just about everybody, including his critics. But it seems more likely in this case that Tebow will very, very, very respectfully decline Warner's offer for help. Tebow opened his postgame media meeting Sunday by thanking Jesus Christ, and he closed the session by saying, "God bless."

  • I believe that Tebow is so right in letting people know who he is and what he stands for. Amen we have people that come out and want to be openly gay but, others bark at someone when they want to share their faith come on. That is what is wrong with this country any more people want to stand up for the things taken this country down and not what made this country
  • well said sir. "In god we trust"
  • He is a football player.....he is NOT a role model, he is NOT someone who is experienced at life, he's 24 years old and has had evcerything handed to him on a silver platter.
What are you going to be saying when he gets caught with a prostitute or boyscout in his bedroom?
  • Not gonna happen!!!
  • Jesuzz, grow up. I have never and will never be a gator fan but I have become a Tebow fan. Keep it up Tim. Kurt Warner is only jealous and Jake Plummer sucked at football.
  • That was well put. Nicely done.
  • Your an idiot...
  • what did they say when you did?
  • So athletes aren't role models........well usually they are not good ones, but they definately are role models. As far as what I would say "when he get's caught with a prostitute or boyscout" will be "Jesuzz why are you dressed up like Tebow?"
  • First of all interesting name do you have a problem with faith, what happen's if I don't give a sh!!t about what you think or feel.Second why do you feel you have a right to judge this young man or any other person in Life. You might just start in the mirror!
  • You are the reason why the 1st amendment should be altered not everyone should have the freedom of speech. Cause what you just said only makes someone assume your iq is lower than that of an 3 yr old child.
  • I dont care for Tebow. I am a Georgia fan and a Chiefs fan and so I have never really cared for Tebow. How though can you say he has been handed everything when he has worked his ass off for who knows how long to get to where he is at. He is a very religious person... Is that wrong, no its not. Its his beliefs and he wants to thank who he believes helped him get there. He is not telling people to believe what he does. If someone wants to see him as a role model thats there decision. He is human though and he isnt perfect
  • Thank You Jesus that You didn’t tone it . Then we wouldn’t have You as a Savior. And as far as I remember this is America, We have freedom of speech,so I thought. Tebow is not pushing his beliefs in God down anyone throat. I believe the only ones that would come against Tebow are people who hate Jesus. Luke 21:17and you will be hated by all because of My name. Tebow is not hurting anyone, yet people who don’t know about our God make accusations for they do not know God. Tebow knows God, and every other Christian should take the same way Tebow has. “Do not judge so that you will not be judged Matthew 7:1. Why do you all become so offended. Why do you hate what is good. Tebow is not hurting anyone except the evil one of this world. So what side do you stand?
  • I agree that Tim Tebow should be allowed to speak his mind because of the first amendment!!!
  • So should Chaz Bono and bin Laden
  • Of course he's "allowed" to speak his mind. And we're "allowed" to roll our eyes when he speaks and suggest that he keep his religous beliefs to himself.
  • AMEN! I am on Tebow's side.
  • AMEN!!!
  • The problem with this country and Earth is people NOT getting the real message:
Fill your heart with UNCONDITIONAL LOVE for All
no more wars...no more hate..no more crime...no more enemies..no more awful things...no more negativity
Unconditional love is the only way and then we will bring Heaven here

ANY religion or belief system that brings you to unconditional love is awesome. If YOUR religion or religious leaders speak out AGAINST another person, group religion, etc etc, please tell them that by filling their own hearts with unconditional love, they WILL SEE how wrong they've been by doing negativity to another.
Don't care what your religious books say as many have been changed over the centuries. =)
Listen to YOUR OWN HEART and ask for guidance to find unconditional love from whatever belief system you follow
  • I've got a big old bleeding hemoroid on my A-hole. You wanna see? I love to show it to people.

Opinions are like A-holes, everyone has one....the world would be a whole lot better of a place if people would learn to keep there's to themselves.
  • Hey Jesuzz???? What the F...? Are you insane? In order to create a possessive pronoun it is spelled their you idiot. No I don't want to see your A hole but I'd like to know if you have any spirituality. He isn't giving an opinion he is expressing his beliefs. Learn how to spell and maybe someone will take you as credible.
  • Criticize my logic not my spelling. Ohhhh, you can't because your too inept and week minded to think for yourself.
It's an expression, and I'm npot typing an essay here.
  • Jesuzz guess you really should head back to elementary school before speaking. By inept and "week" don't you mean inept and "WEAK"? On top of that what is "I'm npot typing an essay here" supposed to mean? Perhaps a field trip back to third grade grammar class should be in order for you! LMFAO!!!!
  • Overlooking your inept writing abilities (And it is kind to imply your writing abilities are merely “inept”. After all, inept means “generally incompetent” and your writing skill achieve a special, noteworthy level of incompetence.) and just focusing on your opinion of opinions: “Opinions are like A-holes, everyone has one....the world would be a whole lot better of a place if people would learn to keep there's to themselves”; why would you then express your A-hole-like opinion?

BTW, in case it escaped you, I am criticizing your “logic”. If, stating the opinion, that opinions should not be stated, can be called “logical”, then yes, I am criticizing your logic.
  • Since you are someone who seems to hate opinions, and equates them with A-holes, why don't you stop spewing them out. Your opinions are not only meaningless, they are hypocritical. Why don't you just read and stay off the keyboard.
  • amen...i wish more people wouldnt be afraid to spread the word...if your a christian you shouldnt hide it...you shouldnt be afraid to be one and worry about what people have to say... tebow is human, he will make mistakes in life and as well on the football field...he never said he was perfect, he is human. As human beings we sin all the time... and believe it or not he is reaching a lot of people....what is it to you if you dont believe how is affecting you life...he isnt juding you
    !!
  • First of all, if Kurt Warner wants to give Tim Tebow advice then give Tim Tebow advice. Don't get your name in the paper by saying what you would do. I somewhat agree with Warner if his heart is in the right place and only God knows why Kurt toned it down - to be more effective as a witness, to get along with others, to get a job after football? It's true if you aren't effective in what you are trying to do, then you should try something different. Tebow should only "tone it down" if his approach isn't leading more people to Christ; not because it offends believers like Kurt Warner or non believers like Jake Plummer. When i look at Tebow, i see sencerity and no self serving. I'm not sure what i see anymore when i look at Kurt Warner. The Bible says if you have a problem with a Christian then go to that Christian. It doesn't say to talk to the media.
  • I agree with you 100%. It just goes to show you just what kind of man Kurt Warner really is. He had his time in the limelight in the NFL and he is a self proclaimed born-again christian. He could very easily give adive to Tebow personally instead of trying his best to get his name brought out in public once again. I think it just makes him look like a hypocrite. That's right Warner, a Hypocrite. You cant keep you mouth to yourself and went out of your way to have you comments made public about Tebows faith. In my eyes, you are scum, just like the rest of the Tebow haters. I think you owe him and the public an apology. Let's see if this "born-again" christian has what it takes to do the right thing. I beet he won't say a thing or give an apology. Like I said, one self absorbed hypocrite. You college football years sucked. You know it.
  • Well said.
  • I'm sure Jesus was real happy to hear Warner say Tebow should refrain from too many religious comments. People told Jesus the same thing before they crucified him. Tim's statements aren't contrived and Tim can handle the media as he knows it's nothing compare to what Christ went through on earth. How many overseas missions has Kurt been on?
  • You do know that Jesus was not crucified for making religious comments, but he was crucified for claiming that he was the son of God. Come on people, let's not make it up as we go along to suit our arguement. Tim Tebow has the right to say what he wants, but the public have the right to react however they see fit. And the truth of the matter is most people are offended because they think he was given preferential treatment because of his Jesus-loving persona, and that he is not the most talented player for the position. Should those who publicly proclaim their love for Jesus be treated better and given more opportunity than those that refrain from commenting on religion at all? Critique him based on his football skill. This is not church, this is the NFL.
  • Can you not read! I read this again and not once did I read where they said Jesus was crucified for making religious comments. They simply said that he was told that right before he was crucified! Geesh people! Ok ok you say what you say. But read this. If you put Jesus into ANYTHING you do it will prosper if its in God's will!
  • Read Liam57's comment:

"People told Jesus the same thing before they crucified him" The statement before that states about refraining from religious comments.

But I agree with I_manifest, that wasn't why he was crucified anyways...
  • I would say that “claiming to be the Son of God” does rise to the level of a religious comment. But you ask that we judge him by his football skill:

Google "Tebow Record" and today's 1st google line is: "Tim Tebow is smashing QB rushing records"

“Tebow was the fastest quarterback in franchise history to rush for nine touchdowns in his career (15 games), and also holds the second-most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in team history, second only to John Elway‘s 33.

As a rookie in 2010, Tebow rushed 43 times for 227 yards (5.3 avg.) and six touchdowns and recorded two of the top three single-game rushing performances by a quarterback in franchise history.

This season, Carolina’s Cam Newton joined Tebow (Den., 2010) and Fran Tarkenton (Min., 1961) as the only three players in NFL history to run and pass for a touchdown in four or more games during their rookie season(s).

On Sunday, Tebow rushed 22 times for 67 yards. That marked the most rushing attempts by a quarterback in a single game in NFL history. Second on the list is Billy Kilmer (20 carries with the 49ers in 1961). Among modern-era quarterbacks, the closest anyone comes to 22 carries is Michael Vick‘s 14 carries in 2004.”

5 and 1 as a rookie, not too shabby...
  • I'm so sick of religious zealots with their big mouths. Live your life right, Tebow, but there is no place for your nut stuff on the football field.
  • Wow....I would much rather have my boys look up to Tim Tebow as a role model versus Ben Rapelesberger...miss steelerlady2. And if he chooses to thank his Lord & Savior on the football field so be it!
  • why not look up to someone deserving of admiration?
Martin Luther King Jr. for example.
Why do you wanna put this wack job on a pedestal? He's using you for attention all to his own personal benefit.
  • Hopefully, if anyone is putting Tebow on a pedelstal it is because of his playing ability. He can be a good role model for kids but that doesn't mean he belongs on a pedelstal. There are many good Christian men that work every day jobs that can be good role models for kids. Put him on a pedestal and somebody will try to knock him down - be it the truth or not. Leave him alone, let him express his views just like every other person has the right to do. If the press gets tired of it they can leave the room. If you get tired of reading about it, quit reading.
  • What makes Tim Tebow and authority?
  • I THINK YOU BEST STICK WITH JESUS, THAT IS IF YOU KNOW HIM.
  • Hey jesuzz, what is wrong with you? Why do you hate Tebow so much. I can pretty much gaurantee that Martin Luther King Jr. would be 100% percent more tollerant of a person like Tebow than you. So why don't you follow after MLK Jr's teachings. If you don't know them, use this thing called the internet to research him.
  • ONLY A FOOL SAYS THERE IS NO GOD. WHO'S FOOL ARE YOU.

BY THE WAY, THERE IS HELL
  • You have absolutely no proof. ZERO, Ziltch, nada.
  • but remember sir one of us is right are you willing to take that chance.I had lot's of respect for Kurt until now,I just lost some.He can witness the way he wants and let Tim Tebow do it the way he choses.Curt remember If you are ashamed to own me before men I will be ashamed to own yo ubefore my Father in Heaven
  • What am i taking a chance with?
Religion is a tool for politicians, leaders and the weak minded. I lead a good life, i honor my wife and family, i dont steal, i try to give back to those in need, i pay my taxes and treat others with respect.
What if you are wrong? What if it is Allah that is god and you are forced to burn in a worse or more severe state of hell for all eternity as an infidel? wouldn't you feel like a fool being manipulated and wasting your time studying a bunch of fairy taqles all your life?
  • And we are tired of people getting away with sexual assault because they play football.
  • Please lady, you tell Tebow to live his life. Well that exactly what he's doing, don't you get it? And you are not the morality lawmaker for the NFL. He can say and act however he pleases on the football field. If he loses on the field, or the owners just don't like him for it, they can fire him. let him live his life. I'm sure you don't have a problem with the drunken, or illegal drug taking football players. So be just as fair to Tebow.
  • I finally have an NFL player that my kids can look up to as a role model. I hope he continues to do exactly what he does. He should not change a thing. As long as other NFL players outwardly express who they are, Tebow should express who he is. It is great to see something different that the drugs, women beaters, weapons violations, and other issues. I am not a Broncos Fan, but I am a Tebow fan.
  • Seriously? What a crock! The Manning brothers have been squeaky clean for years, but they are not good enough role models? I am a 49er fan, and I can name three stars on that team that are great role models (Alex Smith, Frank Gore, Patrick Willis) To judge is not very Christ-like. But then again, most Christians pick and choose the parts of the Bible that they want to follow. Please do not insult the majority of the league to make your point. It makes people dislike Tebow even more.
  • Agree totally as well. Was a big Staubach fan as a kid. Wasn't religious but you could watch and listen to him and tell he was a great guy.
    Go Cowboys!
