The 14-0 Mt. Union (Ohio) Purple Raiders and the 14-0 Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks meet tonight in the Stagg Bowl*—the NCAA Division III Championship Game—in Salem, Virginia. This is the seventh consecutive Division III season to end with Mt. Union and Whitewater playing in the title game.

Mt. Union and Wisconsin-Whitewater meet in the Stagg Bowl for a 7th consecutive season.

Mt. Union—alma mater of Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers and Colts wide receiver Pierre Garçon—has long been the class of Division III. Since the championship game moved to Salem in 1993, the Purple Raiders have won 10 Stagg Bowls and played in 4 others. The Warhawks are late bloomers by comparison, not reaching the title game until 2005 (a 35-28 loss to Mt. Union). But Whitewater—alma mater of Houston Texans punter Matt Turk—comes into tonight’s game as the 2-time defending champion.

Over the past 6 seasons, the Purple Raiders and Warhawks have won 3 titles apiece. So tonight’s contest is a game 7 of sorts (or a season 7).

I cannot think of another example of two teams playing each other for a championship in so many consecutive seasons. The Yankees and Giants met in 3 straight World Series in the early 1920s; the Red Wings and Canadiens played in 3 straight Stanley Cup Finals in the 1950s; and Washington-St. Louis and UC San Diego played each other for 3 consecutive Division III Volleyball Championships in the early 1990s. Aside from those two examples, I can’t think of a pair of teams that met in more than 2 consecutive title games. Feel free to correct me in the comment section.

* The Division III Championship Game, like the Big Ten title game, is named for legendary University of Chicago coach Amos Alonzo Stagg. The Maroons currently compete in Division III.
