The New York Jets are only the 19th most popular team in the NFL according to a recent ESPN poll. The Jets are ranked behind the Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins. The Jets may be media darlings, but not many Americans identify them as their favorite team. At least you can say it's not a bunch of bandwagon fans cheering on the green and white every Sunday. While it is surprising to see "newer" teams like the Seattle Seahawks and teams without much recent success and from a small market like the Kansas City Chiefs ahead of the New York Jets on the list, it's not a huge surprise to see the Jets in the lower half of the poll. It's not easy being a Jets fan. Since Super Bowl III, the team has provided fans with ample heartbreak and even a fair share of embarrassing moments, but not even a second Super Bowl appearance. The fans are hungry for that dream to finally be realized, and last season was just another kick in the backside. The fans that are left are die-hards. In 2009 and 2010 some probably jumped on the bandwagon with a fun, brash team that delivered on the field. Then things got ugly in 2011 and most of those fans have probably fallen by the wayside and hitched on with another fanbase. The Tim Tebow factor apparently wasn't enough to greatly tip the scales for the Jets. So many have talked about his massive contingent of supporters that are supposed to be a distraction for Mark Sanchez. Well, they didn't have a ton of impact on this poll. Some other surprises are seeing the Baltimore Ravens ranked No. 23 and the Oakland Raiders only No. 12, while the New Orleans Saints are ranked seventh. The success of the Ravens and old school popularity of the Raiders would seem tow arrant a higher place, while the Saints have only had recent success and have been in the news for the wrong reasons lately. The NFL isn't a popularity contest and at times some fans can be fickle. These numbers are fluid depending on who is having success, but the die-hards will always remain.
