Geno Smith might be used as a read option quarterback this season. Remember last year when the New York Jets traded for Tim Tebow and planned to use him in specific offensive packages? Well once again the Jets have decided that if Geno Smith is not named the starter, they will have specific read-option packages for him to run during games. What the New York Jets have failed to realize is that using two quarterbacks in an NFL game is not the right way to score points. Changing quarterbacks throughout a game only hurts an offense’s rhythm. If Smith is not named the starter, putting him in sporadically throughout football games will only set back the progress of Mark Sanchez and the offense. I’ve attended West Virginia University for three years now an have seen Geno Smith play ever since he was the starter his sophomore season. In his sophomore season under former coach Bill Stewart, Smith struggled heavily in the read-option system. Smith was not a threat to run the ball and therefore hurt the offense immensely. Noel Devine, running back at WVU in 2010, a preseason Heisman candidate at the time struggled because defenses did not fear or see Smith as a threat running the ball. In 2010 Smith ran for only 217 yards and zero touchdowns in West Virginia’s read-option offense. In 3 seasons as the starter at West Virginia, Smith had under 400 yards rushing and only 4 touchdowns.  The Jets should stick to using Smith for what he is a pocket-passer with a big arm that if need be has the athleticism to run the ball. Other Notes: -Geno Smith said him and Mark Sanchez are “cool” after Smith did not attend Sanchez’s  ’Jets West’ camp this past week. Smith said he is preparing himself to be the starter and that their is no hard feelings between the two quarterbacks. -Stephen Hill says he sees the Jets making a deep playoff run this season. In an interview on NFL Newtowk, Hill said ““We will be in the playoffs and deep in the playoffs.” The Jets will have to improve rapidly on offense for them to have any chance of winning more than eight games.
