According to ProFootballTalk, the New York Jets currently have over $8 million in salary cap space. That figure will cause most to start complaining that the Jets didn't do enough in free agency or that they need to go out and make another signing with that much salary cap space, but there's a reason the Jets are holding on to that money. Teams can still roll over their excess cap space into next season, like the Jets did last year, and the Jets are projected to be over the cap already for next season.

Mike Tannenbaum is known for his ability to maneuver around the salary cap. His ability to judge personnel and make player evaluations has been questioned, but he has always been able to wiggle his way out of salary cap trouble. There's a reason he's sitting on the extra $8 million in salary cap space and it's tied to the long-term health of the franchise.

Contrary to the Super Bowl or bust view held by many outside of the Jets organization, Mike Tannenbaum's job isn't to go for broke every season in an effort to win it all. Mike Tannenbaum was hired to have the foresight to put the team in a position to contend over the long haul. An all-out one year run doesn't work very often in the NFL, with 31 other teams, the threat of injuries and other complications standing in the way.

That being the case, a minor upgrade at wide receiver – or even right tackle – that takes a chunk of that space isn't worth the long-term ramifications. With the Jets already over the projected salary cap, it would mean lots of contract restructures and probably cuts and trades that would reduce the overall talent level of the team. Beyond that, it would put the team in no position to lock up Darrelle Revis for the long haul.

Expect the Jets to hang on to their salary cap space, and with good reason. The franchise will be better off for it and more likely to compete beyond this year.
