In the beginning of every week throughout the regular season, Staff Writer Dalbin Osorio will provide an overview of the upcoming New York Jets opponent. He kicks things off with a closer look at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Once the Tampa Bay Bucs and New York Jets completed their trade of Darrelle Revis, the Week 1 match-up took on a whole extra layer of meaning. What was once thought to be a battle between 2009 first round quarterbacks not named Matthew Stafford, was now morphed into the “Revis Bowl.” After a summer of beat writers with agendas ripping the team to shreds, the only thing that matters is upon us: a 1 PM kickoff on Sunday, September 8th at MetLife Stadium. Let’s get to know the opponent that will be lining up across from the New York Jets during Week 1. Week 1: Tampa Bay Bucs 2012 Offensive Rankings: 13th in points scored (24.3 per game), 9th in total yards (6,078), 10th in passing yards (3,983), 8th in passing touchdowns (27), 22nd in interceptions (17), 11th in yards per completion (6.7), 15th in rushing yards (1,837), 12th in rushing touchdowns (13), and 11th in yards per carry (4.4). Overview: A strong running team, led by rookie Doug Martin (319 carries for 1,454 yards and 11 TDs). Their passing attack is led by first round draft pick Josh Freeman, former San Diego Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson (72 catches for 1,384 yards and 8 TDs), and wide receiver Mike Williams (63 catches for 996 yards and 9 TDs.). Freeman had an up and down year in 2012, completing only 54% of his passes and throwing 17 INTs, but he did rack up 27 TDs and almost 4,000 yards. Key Additions: Guard Gabe Carimi Tight End Tom Crabtree Key Subtractions: Wide Receiver Arrelious Benn Tight End Dallas Clark (47 catches for 435 yards and 4 TDs) Injuries Offensive Guard Carl Nicks, MRSA Tight End Tom Crabtree, high ankle sprain Kicker Lawrence Tynes, MRSA 2012 Defensive Rankings: 23rd in points allowed (24.6 per game), 29th in yards allowed (6,078), 32nd in passing defense, 28th in passing touchdowns allowed, first in rushing defense and yards per carry allowed (3.3.), and 18th in rushing touchdowns allowed (13), and 12th in turnovers forced (26). Overview: A very stout run defense led by LB Lavonte David and his 112 tackles. The pass rush was led by defensive end Michael Bennett and his 9 sacks and defensive tackle Gerald McCoy (5 sacks). Tampa’s pass defense was atrocious in 2012, as the safety tandem of Ronde Barber and Mark Barron struggled consistently in coverage. Key Additions: Cornerback Johnathan Banks Cornerback Darrelle Revis Safety Dashon Goldson Key Subtractions: Safety Ronde Barber Cornerback Eric Wright Injuries: None Series History: The New York Jets are 9-1 overall, including 6-0 at home, against Tampa in franchise history.
