Now that the Monday 4 p.m. deadline has come and gone for all 32 NFL teams to trim rosters down to the maximum 75  layer limit, we can look at some veteran names that are available that could help the New York Jets. Two of the available vets are tight end Chris Cooley, formerly of the Washington Redskins, and wide receiver Jabar Gaffney, of the New England Patriots.

Since both Dustin Keller and Jeff Cumberland are nursing injuries, but have been said to be a go for week one, it still would not hurt the Jets to consider Chris Cooley as the possible replacement to Josh Baker. Baker did clear waivers and is now on injured reserve, meaning the end of his season. Chris Cooley, who has been with the Washington Redskins his entire eight-year NFL career seemed reluctant to want to put on another uniform based on his comments at his press conference. If the Jets can offer him the right amount of money and promise of playing time at both tight end and h-back, which he was practicing some in camp with Washington, then he could be coaxed to join Gang Green. He was injured much of last season and three years ago in 2009, but the upside of having another veteran tight end who can block in Sparano's offense would outweigh that downside.

Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley did return from their injuries on Sunday, but Stephen Hill has been so-so thus far, and Chaz Schilens hasn't gotten that many reps on the field either due to his injury. It would behoove the Jets to add a veteran to the mix, something almost every pundit has been saying also, to give Mark Sanchez a ready-made weapon, and then allow for younger talent to be brought along more slowly. Additionally, Gaffney has been pretty durable over his career, not missing very many games, and would give the Jets an edge over the division rival New England Patriots, since he has had two stints in New England.

Lastly, on Tuesday the New York Jets were awarded punter Spencer Lanning off waivers from the Cleveland Browns. So apparently there will be competition on Thursday in the game versus Philadelphia. He is an undrafted free agent that has already been with three NFL teams, so we will see how much competition he will provide to T.J. Conley.
