[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="576"] If signed by the Jets, can David Garrard compete against Mark Sanchez?[/caption] According to a report by ESPN.com's NFL insider Adam Schefter, the New York Jets are close to coming to an agreement with free agent quarterback David Garrard. In the report, Schefter quotes Garrard as saying  he, "Anticipates putting a deal together" with the Jets, who have to sort through some salary cap issues before a deal can be completed. Another source close to the situation cited by Schefter said the deal is likely. Garrard worked out with the Jets last thursday and according to the report, the team came away impressed with the 35-year old quarterback, whom they think would fit well in their offensive system. The long-time Jacksonville Jaguar quarterback signed with the Miami Dolphins last season and was competing for the starting job against Ryan Tannehill before injuries eventually led to his release. The Jets have been saying since the end of a disappointing 7-9 season that they intended to bring in competition for current starting quarterback Mark Sanchez and apparently that competition is going to be a guy, who hasn't played in a regular season game since the 2010 season. Even though he is on the downside of his career, Garrard did post an 8-6 record as a starter in 2010 and has a career record of 39-37. He also has a career completion percentage of over 61 percent to go along with 89 touchdown passes and 54 interceptions. He also has had 17 rushing touchdowns over the course of his nine-year career. His last full season was his best as he had career high's in completion percentage (64.5) and touchdowns (23). As far as him being an alternative for Sanchez, I'm not buying it. For one Garrard is a not a long-term solution by any stretch of the imagination and he has only taken a team to the playoffs once in his career. The only way he could take a team to the playoffs is if it was filled with talent, which the Jets are clearly not. They lack playmakers in the passing game and their starting running back (Shonn Greene) is set to be a free agent. If that wasn't enough, the Jets are also considering trading away their best player in Darrelle Revis. So I have serious doubts about whether Garrard can serve as legitimate competition to Sanchez, let alone take this team to the playoffs if he did somehow win the job. The bottom line here is that this move signals the Jets want someone to compete with Sanchez but Jet fans need to wake up to the realization that the 2009 first round pick will be their starting quarterback once again. Drafting a rookie in the early in the draft or trading for someone like Seattle's Matt Flynn would have been real competition against Sanchez. A 35-year old veteran, who hasn't started a game in two years and wasn't that great to begin with, not so much. Looks like the Jets will sink or swim with Sanchez in 2013.
