Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs are closing in on the top spot, but having broken through just yet. The Kansas City Chiefs had a prime opportunity to wrest the #1 spot in the isportsweb NFL Power Rankings. Undefeated, possessing a dominant defense and a punishing run game heading into a seemingly cake game against a Cleveland Browns team that started its third quarterback of the season and an over 30 running back picked up off the streets. Then the improbable happened. The Browns were surprisingly competitive, trailing the Chiefs by a mere three points heading into the fourth quarter. The Chiefs defense, which had logged ten interceptions in seven games failed to register a single pick against Jason Campbell, who hadn’t started an NFL game since December 9th, 2012 with Chicago, and the Browns defense held Jamaal Charles to his second lowest rushing total of the season. Sure, KC still won the game, but they didn’t dominate against a lesser opponent the way you would expect an undefeated team to do. To be fair, Seattle hardly looked dominating on Monday Night Football, barely holding off a Sam Bradford-less St. Louis team in a 14-9 stinker. That being said, two wrongs don’t make a right, so I can’t really put the Chiefs ahead of them based on this past week’s performance. The Chiefs have another shot at proving their dominance this week against Buffalo, but Seattle also plays the winless Buccaneers, so it may have to wait yet another week to try and take control of the top of the rankings. 1. Seattle Seahawks (Last week: 1) Marshawn Lynch rushed just 8 times for 23 yards, Russell Wilson completed just 10 passes for 139 yards, and the Seahawks barely beat a struggling Rams team many expected to wither away after losing their quarterback for the season. Seattle has to show more to keep a hold of the #1 spot. (Note: If you don’t remember seein week 7′s power ranking last week, it’s because they were never posted. Check them out here.) 2. Kansas City Chiefs (Last week: 2) Oh, if they had only laid waste to the Browns – especially since they were at Arrowhead – then they could have finally taken control of the Power Rankings. But they didn’t, so they don’t. 3. Indianapolis Colts (Last week: 3) The Colts come off the bye-week heading to play the Texans at Houston. How well they can throw the ball without Reggie Wayne will be the biggest question form here on out. 4. New Orleans Saints (Last week: 5) The Saints keep marching onward to the playoffs behind Drew Brees, who went nuts on the Bills with 5 touchdowns and 332 yards. 5. Denver Broncos (Last week: 4) The bye week couldn’t have come at a better time for this team. Peyton is struggling with two ankle injuries and just threw more interceptions in one game than he had for the entire season. 6. San Francisco 49ers (Last week: 6) Sorry, 49ers fans. A blowout win over Jacksonville – even one in London – doesn’t give your team a lot of cred here. They’re good, but that win isn’t enough to move them from the sixth spot for the third week in a row. After a rough start, Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers now sit at 6-2. 7. Cincinnati Bengals (Last week: 8) Andy Dalton is quickly quieting his critics after a devastating performance against the Jets in week 8, but the biggest surprise for Cincy has been the emergence of rookie wide receiver Marvin Jones as a legitimate #2 with A.J. Green. 8. Green Bay Packers (Last week: 7) Green Bay is officially on a roll, winning four in a row and five out of six. Giving up 31 points to a terrible Vikings team isn’t a way to endear yourselves to me in the Power Rankings though, which is why they get moved down a spot. 9. Detroit Lions (Last week: 8) Megatron. What else needs to be said? 10. New England Patriots (Last week: 9) Yes, they wound up beating the Dolphins, but were getting dominated in the first half of that game. I’m just not sold on this team right now. 11. San Diego Chargers (Last week: 11) The Chargers have a very winnable game this week against the Redskins, and that’s always a nice thing to have coming out of your bye week. 12. Chicago Bears (Last week; 12) With Cutler still out, I just don’t see the Bears offense (led by QB Josh McCown) keeping pace with the Packers. 13. Carolina Panthers (Last week: 18) Cam Newton is starting to show flashes of the player we all thought we’d see earlier in the season. The results? Three straight wins heading into a match up against the lowly Falcons defense. Fantasy owners (of which I am one) should be salivating. Will the Panthers be able to challenge the Saints for the NFC South? Probably not, but it could be fun. 14. Arizona Cardinals (Last week: 19) Is Arizona really the 14th best team in the NFL? Probably not, but there’s just so much mediocrity behind them that this was the most logical place for them to be right now. 15. Dallas Cowboys (Last week: 13) A tough, close, hard-fought loss against the Lions last week. But a loss none the less. How to you let a guy catch 14 passes for THREE HUNDRED AND TWENTY NINE yards? 16. Tennessee Titans (Last week: 15) The Titans give up the 24th most yards on the ground. The Rams’ Zac Stacy just lit up a stout Seattle defense for 134 yards. Tennessee’s saving grace could be facing Kellen Clemens. 17. Miami Dolphins (Last week: 14) It went from bad to worse last week against the Pats. The Dolphins have no offensive line, as the gave up six sacks last week. That is why they won’t make the playoffs again this year. 18. Baltimore Ravens (Last week: 22) The Ravens come off their bye week in desperate need of finding some consistency. They face a scrappy Cleveland team on the road, so this week might not be the one the hoped for. 19. St. Louis Rams (Last week: 16) Zac Stacy is showing to be a revelation, averaging 4.8 yards per carry in his last four games, but can’t seem to find the end zone. Having Kellen Clemmens as your QB won’t help things either. 20. Cleveland Browns (Last week: 17) Jason Campbell played exceptionally well considering he faced one of the toughest defenses in the league this year. But whether or not that was just a flash in the pan has yet to be determined. 21. Atlanta Falcons (Last week: 21) The fact that this team sucks so bad right now will cost someone on the coaching staff his job this offseason. HC Mike Smith and Atlanta are a Falcon mess in 2013 (see what I did there?). 22. New York Jets (Last week: 20) Ouch. What else can you say? 23. Houston Texans (Last week: 21) When you turn to Case Keenum as your answer at quarterback, things are looking dire. At least they’re likely to get Arian Foster and Ben Tate back against Indy. 24. Philadelphia Eagles (Last week: 23) Year One of the Chip Kelly experiment isn’t going so well, is it? 25. Oakland Raiders (Last week: 28) It’s not impossible to think that the Raiders can get to .500 this week. That’s quite a feat for Terrelle Pryor and Co. if it happens. Who honestly thought Terrelle Pryor would have been as effective as he’s been, and giving Oakland a chance at a .500 record this late in the year? 26. Washington Redskins (Last week: 24) It doesn’t matter how Ropbert Griffin plays if their defense continues to suck this bad. 27. New York Giants (Last week: 29) What’s this? A two-game win streak for the Giants?? And they are only two games out of first place. #SoYou’reSayingThere’sAChance 28. Pittsburgh Steelers (Last week: 26) Just when you think the Steelers might start to turn things around, they have a game like they did against Oakland. 29. Buffalo Bills (Last week: 27) After getting nailed by the Saints last week, the Bills now face a tough test against the last unbeaten team in the NFL. 30. Minnesota Vikings (Last week: 30) What a waste of Adrian Peterson’s talent. And FYI, as far as my prediction that he wouldn’t hit 1,500 yards this year, Peterson is now on pace for 1,305 yards. 31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Last week: 31) I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that Greg Schiano is the first coach to get fired this offseason. Yep, Greg, that dump in your pants you just took is your coaching career in Tampa Bay. 32. Jacksonville Jaguars (Last week: 32) This team probably won’t win a game all year.
