The NFL’s efforts to reach an agreement with the NFLPA over blood testing for HGH has made lots of headlines lately, with the general consensus that this is a good thing, and it’s about time. While the general public seems happy enough with the developments, each of the parties in the negotiation have set out to spin the news of the process, ostensibly to put pressure on the other side. On August 14, Christine Brennan of USA Today took the NFLPA to task over what she called stalling tactics. An excerpt from Brennan: If we asked every NFL player taking human growth hormone to raise his hand, would a dozen hands be raised on each NFL team? Two dozen? Maybe more? We don’t know. But we do know this: NFL players have something to hide. It’s a big secret, and a bad one. We know this because for a third consecutive season, the NFL Players Association appears to be preparing to again drag its feet rather than allow its players to be tested for HGH. … The NFLPA and its rank and file must think we haven’t been paying much attention during the past couple decades of the Steroids Era.
