The Green Bay Packers have a punt returner problem. It shouldn't be considered that big of an issue, to be honest, but there are some reasons for it to be real. First, Packers fans know how much the special teams have been a costly pain for the franchise. And second, since Jayden Reed got hurt, the Packers are risking Matthew Golden and even Romeo Doubs to unsuccessfully return punts—Golden took a monster shot against the Dallas Cowboys.
The Packers had Mecole Hardman on the practice squad, but released him last week—an indication that the performance in practice hadn't been good enough.
The good news is that general manager Brian Gutekunst is always open to adding new pieces, and Richmond Williams and the pro personnel have done an excellent job finding good players around the league, and even in minor leagues. Green Bay has two open roster spots on the 53-man roster.
There are some intriguing options on other teams' practice squads, and also a CFL star who could sign later in the season. Remember that if a player is signed from another team's PS to the active roster, the Packers would have to keep him for at least three weeks.
A fifth-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2021, he's been with several NFL teams, and with the Giants since last year. He's a fine depth wide receiver, but his returning abilities are real. Last year, he had PFF grades over 74 in both kickoff and punt returns, which is exactly the type of piece the Packers could spend a roster spot on. Even though he's experienced, Smith-Marsette is just 26.

A seventh-round rookie, Bergen had a great college career as a punt returner. In his four years at Montana, Bergen had the record for most average yards per punt return in school's history (16.71), and also set the FCS record for most punt returns for a touchdown (eight). He didn't make the 49ers' 53-man roster, but the knowledge of a similar offensive system could be useful as well.
White is another seventh-round rookie who was a great college football returner. Last year at UNLV, he was named the MW Special Teams Player of the Year. He averaged 22.5 per punt last year, in addition to one touchdown.
He's been in the NFL since 2022, playing for the Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, and Browns. He also spent some time in the USFL with the Michigan Panthers. Probably not the most explosive player, but a somewhat safe option.
This would be a great alternative, but Vaval will only become available to sign with NFL teams after the Grey Cup in November. Vaval spent some time with the Atlanta Falcons last year, and he's a rookie in the CFL. He's had four return touchdowns for the Blue Bombers, a third of the return TDs in the entire Canadian league this season. He's fast enough, but his ability to read and react is impressive. By the way, he's the only defensive player on this list, a defensive back.
Trey Vaval's 128-yard missed field goal return touchdown vs. Ottawa is tied for the 7th longest in #CFL history.
