Date: Wednesday, August 21, 2013 Practice Time: 11:00 a.m. (Total: 1 hour, 38 minutes) Movin' On Up: TE Brandon Bostick The play of the day belonged to Bostick. After spending all of last season on the practice squad, the second-year tight end continued to make a strong case for a spot on the 53-man roster with a highlight catch in Wednesday's practice. Bostick made a one-handed, leaping grab in the end zone with two defenders closing in. It was the type of catch that was sure to get the entire coaching staff's attention. The Packers' tight end group is crowded and talented, making it difficult for the 24-year-old Bostick to claim one of those coveted jobs when the regular season begins. Undrafted Jake Stoneburner has also been impressive, adding to the already deep unit that consists of Jermichael Finley, Matthew Mulligan, Andrew Quarless, D.J. Williams and Ryan Taylor. But there's not much more Bostick can do than what he's displayed so far in training camp. The rest is up to the coaching staff and front office. So You Had A Bad Day: K Mason Crosby Just as Crosby seemed to be gaining some positive momentum, the seventh-year kicker lost all of it with three consecutive missed field goals in Wednesday's practice. Three in a row. Special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum was so upset that he yelled into his microphone "Make the kick. Let's go." That was heard by everyone in attendance (including at least 1,500 fans), as Slocum's words are amplified through the speaker system. "He didn't have a good day," coach Mike McCarthy said of Crosby. The timeline for Crosby's latest struggles works out poorly for the Packers. Within the past week, the Miami Dolphins released Dan Carpenter and the Buffalo Bills released Rian Lindell. As those moves were being made, Crosby was kicking the ball better than he has in more than a year. Crosby made all three field-goal attempts in Green Bay's second preseason game and followed it up with making 9 of 10 in Monday's practice. Then, Lindell signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carpenter signed with the Arizona Cardinals. Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reported that the Packers were in play for Carpenter. With both kickers now off the market, Crosby's performance at Wednesday's practice was one of his worst ever. Crosby finished the day having made only 2 of 5 field-goal attempts, with misses coming from distances of 42 yards (twice) and 44 yards. Giorgio Tavecchio went 2 for 2, connecting from 42 yards and 43 yards. Noted: - This is was the first (and only) practice of the week with players in pads. The practice moved at a very rapid rate during its 11 periods, but McCarthy was not happy with the way the players performed. - No more reason to panic, Packers fans. One day after quarterback Aaron Rodgers was absent from practice with a head cold, the former MVP was on the field Wednesday. - Randall Cobb, who missed the past four practices, began the day in pads but disappeared into the Don Hutson Center early on and returned later without his pads. Cobb then played catch on the sideline with a visor on. Based on his extremely limited work, it seemed unlikely that Cobb will play Friday night against the Seattle Seahawks, but surprisingly, McCarthy said the third-year receiver "has a chance" to be ready for that game. - Rookie defensive lineman Datone Jones limped off the field after rolling his ankle. McCarthy had no idea after practice about Jones' availability for Friday's game. - DuJuan Harris continues to be the No. 1 running back, followed by Eddie Lacy. - McCarthy said that "no final decision" has been made in the starting right tackle competition between Don Barclay and Marshall Newhouse. Barclay continues to get nearly all of the first-team snaps at that spot, with Newhouse backing him up. McCarthy said it's his goal to be closer to making a choice at right tackle after watching the film of this Friday's game. - M.D. Jennings will start at safety in Friday's game, according to safeties coach Darren Perry. This is all part of the team's plan to continue switching Jennings and Jerron McMillian back and forth until one of them does enough to claim the job. Perry described that race as "neck in neck." - During the "Last 8" practice period, Graham Harrell threw up a Hail Mary that was caught in the back of the end zone by Williams. The defense failed to swat it down. - B.J. Raji and Robert Francois both had disruptive plays during combo drills. Alex Green was the unfortunate running back who found Raji and Francois closing in on the backfield just as he was being handed the ball. - Micah Hyde remained the No. 1 punt returner. - Jeremy Ross was the No. 1 kick returner, with Johnathan Franklin No. 2, Green No. 3 and Omarius Hines No. 4. - Practice ended with Casey Hayward jumping in and intercepting a pass in the end zone from Vince Young that was intended for Taylor. Sidelined: OLB Andy Mulumba (Knee -- First missed practice) CB James Nixon (Knee Ankle -- Out all week, with exception of a short time Tuesday) TE Matthew Mulligan (Elbow -- Consecutive Missed Practices: 3) CB Tramon Williams - (Knee -- Consecutive Missed Practices: 15; and two games) OL Derek Sherrod (Leg -- Consecutive Missed Practices: 18; and two games) S Sean Richardson (Neck -- Consecutive Missed Practices: 18; and two games) WR Jordy Nelson (Knee surgery -- Out the remainder of training camp)OL Bryan Bulaga (Torn ACL -- Likely to miss the entire season) OL J.C. Tretter (Ankle -- Likely out until midseason) DL Jerel Worthy (Knee -- Likely out until midseason) He's Back: QB Aaron Rodgers (Illness -- Returned after missing one practice) WR Randall Cobb (Right biceps -- Limited participation -- Returned after missing four practices and one game) WR Charles Johnson (Left Leg -- Returned after missing 15 practices and two games) CB Loyce Means (Ankle -- Returned after missing one practice) What's Next: Friday, August 23 - 7:00 p.m. (Preseason Game No. 3 - Home vs. Seattle Seahawks) Sunday, August 25 - 11:30 a.m. (Training Camp Practice No. 19) Follow Paul Imig on Twitter

Packers could look to trade James Starks

The Green Bay Packers drafted two running backs in last April’s draft in Eddie Lacy and Jonathan Franklin. Unfortunately for James Starks, Alex Green, and DeJaun Harris, all running backs previously on the Packers’ roster, there could be one or two odd men out before the start of the regular season. One of the heroes of the 2010 Packer Super Bowl run, Starks is the longest-tenured...

The NFL is getting soft, but is Goodell is trying to make it safe, or prevent lawsuits?

You know the NFL is getting soft when you have a kicker open up about it, and say something. David Buehler of the Dallas Cowboys came out back in 2011 stating he felt the NFL was getting soft and he wasn’t lying. “I think they’re changing the rules too much,” Buehler said on the Ben and […]

Green Bay Packers Training Camp Report: The Good and Not So Good

Who Had a Good Week: Eddie Lacy, RB-Anyone who viewed Saturday nights performance by Eddie Lacy had to feel good about what saw in his quarter and a half of action.  Lacy looked every bit as strong and rugged a runner as advertised and clearly put himself head and shoulders ahead of any other running back who has performed for the Packers thus far this preseason.  The Packers...

Green Bay Packers: Players Most Likely To Break Out In 2013

Because they are so young and there is so much depth, predicting the breakout players on the Packers is harder than most teams. But i'll still give it a go: (Does that sound British?)1. OLB, Nick PerryPerry is the common pick to be the Packers breakout player in 2013. Most people would describe Perry as a freak of nature, and that fits him best. The 2012 first round pick is...

Neal Has No Real Position

Mike Neal is taking snaps at both defensive end and outside linebacker this summer The coaches can say whatever they want, but it’s pretty obvious that Mike Neal is taking snaps at outside linebacker because he didn’t get the job done at defensive end last season. Despite being built like The Incredible Hulk, the former Purdue star got pushed around more often than a middle school...

Packers expect 'all-out war' with Seahawks

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Nearly one full year later, Green Bay Packers safety M.D. Jennings is still reminded constantly about his role in the infamous conclusion of the Monday Night Football game against the Seattle Seahawks. Call it the Fail Mary or the Inaccurate Reception or the game that finally got rid of the NFL's replacement referees, it's the moment that Jennings isn...

Put Mason Out Of His Misery

Veteran placekicker Mason Crosby has been inconsistent in training camp Enough is enough. The Green Bay Packers have given Mason Crosby every chance in the world to show that last season’s abysmal performance was an aberration, but the beleaguered kicker simply hasn’t taken advantage of the opportunity. Three more misses in Wednesday’s practice should prove once and for all...

Packers training camp report: Aug. 20

Date: Tuesday, August 20, 2013 Practice Time: 11:15 a.m. (Total: 2 hours, 14 minutes) Movin' On Up: LB Sam Barrington Barrington has several reasons to feel good about himself after Tuesday's practice. The Packers' seventh-round pick out of South Florida tipped a pass from quarterback Graham Harrell that was intercepted by Jarrett Bush. Barrington was also part of...

TE Jermichael Finley shining in Packers camp

Neither a defender nor the sound of a whistle could stop Packers tight end Jermichael Finley. Two passes, two nice catches on the run for Finley in practice Tuesday. After sidestepping defenders for extra yards, Finley kept right on going for the goal line each time even after coaches blew the plays dead. By all accounts, Finley is having one of the best preseasons of his six-year...

Packers Preseason Game 3: Seahawks come to Lambeau Field

In their first meeting since the infamous "Fail Mary"game last September, the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks will meet Friday night in Lambeau Field. That "loss" in the regular season -- with replacement referees (one in particular) making mind-numbingly dumb calls -- had implications for both teams in the playoffs. Replays clearly showed that Packers...

The Packers are on an upswing after last week’s preseason game, but there are many questions still lurking as the Packers prepare for their rematch with the Seattle Seahawks with a first-string offense that hasn’t quite found the end zone yet in August. Will the emotions from the Fail Mary overshadow the development of the players vying for a roster spot? Listen in as the Cheesehead...

Packer Themed Car Contest To Be Held

After my trip to Lambeau field two seasons ago with my father a Wisconsin native, I truly realized how seriously Green Bay fans take their football as the parking lot was a mass of the famous green and gold color scheme. Apparently come to find out, now a Packers themed car contest will be held in order to pay homage to the folks who chose to decorate their means of transportation...
