Drayton Florence's interception in the final minute sealed a 10-9 victory for Carolina on Sunday to snap the San Francisco 49ers' five-game winning streak and give the Panthers their fifth straight win. Graham Gano kicked a 53-yard field goal with 10:05 remaining that held up as the Panthers (6-3) twice shut down Colin Kaepernick on last-ditch drives with swarming defense. DeAngelo Williams broke two tackles for a 27-yard touchdown run late in the first half that pulled Carolina within 9-7. Gano missed wide left on a 48-yard field goal in the third period, but came through later. San Francisco (6-3) got the ball back with 5:25 left at its 1, then again with 1:02 to go. Phil Dawson kicked a season-best 52-yard field goal among his three for the 49ers, who lost tight end Vernon Davis and rookie safety Eric Reid to concussions.

Five Things We Learned From Carolina's Upset Win in San Francisco

Coming into Sunday's matchup between the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco at Candlestick Park, the Panthers were the team with the bigger questions and doubts. They had a four-game winning streak, but the teams they had beaten had a total of five wins combined between them. How would they fare against better competition?  It was a fair question, one that was not asked...

The Carolina Panthers are 4-0 SU and ATS over their last four games, but they face an equally hot team on Sunday when they visit the San Francisco 49ers, who are 5-0 SU and ATS over their last five games. Bookmakers list San Francisco as a 6-point favorite at home, despite some strong trends – and a computer projection – that favor Carolina. But the computers project this game...

Patriots vs the Carolina Panthers defense

Photo from SB Nation If we learned anything from the Carolina Panthers win over San Francisco, it's that their defense can play. Their defense held San Francisco to a measly 9 points. While their offense only put up 10, holding San Francisco to 9 points is impressive. And that's cause for concern in Patriots Nation. Tom Brady and his young wide receiver core have finally...

Setting the edge against the Carolina Panthers

Photo Courtesy of Ben Margot It's Monday and the Patriots didn't play yesterday, so you have nothing to small talk about with that awkward guy you always see on your lunch break at work. Life can't get much worse than this, but don't fear because the bye week is over and the Patriots are now headed straight for a Monday night clash next week with the Carolina Panthers...

This is a notice to the rest of the NFL: The Carolina Panthers have grown up and should not be taken lightly. While the Panthers 10-9 win over the San Francisco 49ers certainly wasn't the prettiest game of football that was ever played on a Sunday afternoon in the NFL, it certainly was one that was significant for these Panthers. The jury was still out when it came to evaluating...

Pats Face Unique Challenge in Cam Newton

The Patriots have faced a variety of quarterbacks this year, ranging from the elite (Drew Brees, Matt Ryan) to, well, Josh Freeman. This week, they prepare for a doozy of a matchup with Panthers quarterback and Superman impersonator Cam Newton. Newton, the number one overall pick from the 2011 draft, had blossomed into one of the most dynamic threats in the league. At 6'5"...

49ers dangerously close to becoming one-dimensional operation

It may be time to consider the very real possibility that people are on to the way the 49ers do their offensive business – run and tight end you to death. It may also be time to consider that only the very best teams can do something with that knowledge. And it may definitely be time to conclude that the 49ers are losing the weapons that stud their spines more quickly than they...
