In the Patriots 37-16 win over the Jets, they featured the most random of defenses. Sterling Moore started at safety Jeff Tarpinian started at linebacker, Jerod Mayo played middle linebacker again, and DE Brandon Deaderick slid inside next to Vince Wilfork. It was a mishmash unit, a duct-tape job that was simply supposed to maintain against Gang Green. Instead, coach Bill Belichick said the playbook wasn’t smaller, and the group just did what was planned. They were seriously stout. “Hey, we got that next-man-up mentality, and that’s how it has to be,” captain Jerod Mayo told me after the game. “I think we played pretty good. We had some problems, and we still got to get better. But we’re chipping at the rock.” I was surprised that the defense didn’t look simpler given the personnel. Mayo wasn’t.
