NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Patriots are expected to “entertain offers” for backup QB Ryan Mallett now that they’ve locked up Tom Brady to a three-year extension, via NFL Media.
There’s been speculation for months now that Mallett could be on the trading block and many have tossed out the Browns as a potential landing spot. Cleveland hasn’t show any real interest in the idea, but Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland writes that it’s “still not out of the question.”
According to Grossi, the idea is “problematic” due to the fact that the Browns spent their second-round pick on receiver Josh Gordon during the supplemental draft.
“Not having a second-round pick severely restricts the Browns from giving up a No. 3 for Mallett,” writes Grossi.
Mallett, 24, is under contract for another two years at very reasonable salaries. New England is reportedly high on Mallett, but it’s doubtful he’ll see any playing time while Brady is still with the team. It will be interesting to see if a market develops for him as the draft nears.
