The Philadelphia Eagles have been one of the busiest teams in the NFL this offseason. Whether it be signing free agents, killing the 2024 NFL Draft, or signing massive extensions with their own players, Howie Roseman has left no stone unturned as he tries to get his team back into Super Bowl contention.
With the NFL offseason beginning to wind down, roster moves have slowed down. However, there are still some good free agents on the market and some potential trade options for teams.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Eagles look to make another move or two of decent size before the regular season arrives.
Keeping that in mind, the Eagles have been connected to a potential trade with the Browns. The move would be for linebacker Tony Fields, who has been a quality piece for the Cleveland defense.
Bleacher Report recently listed a trade for Fields as a “realistic” move that the Eagles could make.
“Fields has shown flashes in three seasons with the Browns, albeit mostly in a reserve capacity. He appeared in all 17 games last season and recorded 34 tackles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown while allowing an opposing passer rating of 82.0 in coverage.”
As mentioned in that short snippet, Fields has never been able to find a consistent role with the Browns. However, he has produced well when given a chance.
During the 2023 season with Cleveland, Fields ended up playing a limited role and appeared in all 17 regular season games. He ended up recording 34 total tackles to go along with a fumble recovery. Back in 2022, he totaled 48 tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, an interception, a defensive touchdown, and a defended pass.
Those numbers aren’t huge, but they aren’t going to be with the role that he has had with the Browns. If the Eagles want to improve their defensive depth, Fields could be a great option to consider.
A trade with the Browns for Fields would not break the Eagles’ bank. They could make something work for a late-middle round pick. Roseman would likely be interested in that kind of deal for the right player.
Do the Philadelphia Eagles view Fields as a valuable trade target? No one knows. But, he would make senes as a fit in Vic Fangio’s defense and could be had for relatively cheap return.
Expect to continue hearing the Eagles mentioned in quite a few rumors as the season draws closer. Roseman’s aggressiveness this offseason has been noticeable and they’ll be thrown in the mix for many different moves. Hopefully, the moves pay off and Philadelphia can get back to contention in 2024.
