Pittsburgh Steelers mini-camp continued today, again without Mike Wallace who is not endearing himself to neither fans nor ownership with his holdout in protest of the RFA tender he was extended. While Coach Mike Tomlin and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger expect Wallace to sign his offer sheet and report sooner rather than later, there is still a lot of time left before the regular season and it will be interesting to see how this situation plays out.The team also announced a couple of roster moves as the continue to prepare for training camp with the signings of former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Brandon Johnson and veteran long snapper Matt Katula. To make room for these veterans, the team released tight end Wes Lyons and placed wide receiver Connor Dixon (UDFA Duquesne) on the injured / waived list.

As we reported yesterday, Katula will compete with veteran Greg Warren for the teams long snapping duties. During his career, he has spent time with the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots and most recently the Minnesota Vikings in 2011.

Johnson is the more intriguing signing from a depth perspective. The 29-year old linebacker, a 2006 fifth round selection of the Arizona Cardinals, was a special team standout for the Bengals and should provide solid veteran depth to a somewhat inexperienced linebacker corps. The 6-5, 245-pound linebacker projects outside in the Steelers defensive system, as he has the innate ability to both rush the passer and drop into coverage, which he did early in his career for the Bengals.

The Steelers are facing a depth issue at linebacker during mini-camp as starter James Harrison (knee) and back ups Stephenson Sylvester (undisclosed) and Jason Worilds (wrist) are missing time as the recover from injury. While all are expected to be ready for training camp, you can never have enough linebackers in a 3-4 scheme.
