When Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson returns from his hamstring injury, he may have a former first-round pick blocking for him.
The Ravens signed Kenyon Green, the 2022 No. 15 pick of the Houston Texans, to their practice squad on Tuesday. Green’s arrival comes after Carolina signed second-year guard Nick Samac off the Ravens’ practice squad on Sept. 16.
Green, a two-time All-American at Texas A&M, has been busy in recent months. The Texans traded the 6-foot-4, 323-pound guard to the Philadelphia Eagles in March, though the Eagles waived him during final cuts. Philadelphia subsequently waived Green three times between August 25 and September 22.
Although Green has battled injuries and inefficiency in the pros, there’s a reason why he keeps getting opportunities. NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein compared Green to former Pro Bowl guard Richie Incognito ahead of the 2022 draft and predicted he’d become a “good starter” within two years.
“He has pop and anchor in pass protection, but lacks recognition and mirror technique needed to be at his best against athletic interior rushers,” Zierlein wrote. “While Green has some areas to improve, his run blocking can be dominant, which gives him a chance to become a good starter very quickly.”
Things haven’t worked out that way for Green, though. A shoulder injury cost him the entire 2023 season, and Pro Football Focus has rated him as a below-average guard when healthy.
Regardless, we’d be surprised if Green gets a revenge game against the Texans on Sunday afternoon. The 1-3 Ravens desperately need a victory, and they may need to pull off a home victory without Jackson. Cooper Rush is expected to start if Jackson can’t go, and Tyler “Snoop” Huntley, a 2022 Pro Bowl selection, is on the practice squad.
The FanDuel Sportsbook listed the Ravens as +1.5 home underdogs (-105, meaning a $100 bet would net a $195.24 payout) as of Wednesday afternoon.
