The Washington Redskins not only drafted quarterback Robert Griffin III in the 2012 NFL Draft but also quarterback Kirk Cousins and coach Mike Shanahan is confident in the decision because he's seen it work before.

Shanahan told Robert Griffin he will be the starting quarterback from Day One and thinks it will work with Cousins as a backup because he saw it work when John Elway and Gary Kubiak played together for nine years in Denver.

Elway was selected No.1 overall and Gary Kubiak was selected No. 197 in the 1983 NFL Draft.  Shanahan was a Broncos assistant for six seasons during the Elway-Kubiak era and knows the situation worked for Denver.

The situation sounds great for Griffin but not so much for Cousins.

Cousins says he sees himself as a starter in the NFL but told USAToday.com that he is excited to be in Washington.

"It is what it is. I'm excited to be here," Cousins says. "I have a great opportunity ahead of me. The cream always rises to the top. If I'm as good as I hope to be someday then I'm going to get that opportunity, whether here or somewhere else."

Cousins was asked about his relationship with Griffin.

"Robert's a likeable guy," he said. "There's not a whole lot there to not like. We're going to have a great relationship for as long as we're teammates and beyond that, if or when we're not."

Shanahan has said he plans to keep three QBs in Griffin, Cousins and Rex Grossman.
