Reggie Bush is on tour. Well, his first free agent tour since being drafted by the Saints in 2006. He was traded to the Dolphins, so he wasn't signed as free agent. Back to topic. Bush is talking with several teams about what his role would be on those teams. The team with the inside track, according to this Yahoo! Sports article would be the Detroit Lions, because they're prepared to offer him the starting running back job. Oh Detroit, you haven't learned anything.Bush is creeping up in age, at least for running backs. Bush is 28 years old, and is coming up on his career peak. And we can probably assume he's looking for at least a 4-year deal, so that would put him at 32 on the last year of the contract, assuming the Lions don't cut him before then. OK. Bush is old for a running back looking for a starting job. Check.Bush is a reliable offensive weapon, but not a starting running back. Granted, the last two years with Miami have given him the best two year run of his career, over 2,000 rushing yards combined, and almost 300 receiving yards per season. However, as a passing threat out of the backfield, the seasonal numbers only come out to 18.97 yards per game, which isn't much if you're making the argument that Bush is a threat as a receiver. And that's where the Lions will make their mistake. They want Bush as the starting running back. And that's where they need the most help. For the 2012 season, the Lions were 23rd in yards rushing per game at 100.8, barely cracking the century mark. For the 2011 season, they were 29th at 95.2 yards per. Hooray for progress? My point is, the Lions don't need a running back that's going to give them 80 yards on 15 carries. They need a 20+ carry running back for 110 yards per. Do you want to continue to have Calvin Johnson as a threat? Then make defenses respect the run. Otherwise, the defense just sits back and waits for the pass like they've been doing for the last two years. But it's Detroit, and they'll continue to make bad personnel moves with, or without, Matt Millen at the helm.UPDATE: The Lions have agreed to a 4-year deal with Bush. I'll refrain from Busch beer jokes.
