News surfaced early yesterday that Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard had been arrested for driving under the influence in Nebraska. Dennard was pulled over at 2 A.M. in Lincoln, Nebraska after police say Dennard’s car was “straddling a lane.” Various reports also stated that the 23-year old Dennard refused to take a sobriety test after being pulled over, but today the Patriots defensive back is contesting those reports. Dennard is claiming that he passed two breathalyzer tests and one field sobriety test before he was placed under arrest. The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport sent out a series of tweets Friday morning citing information from someone who had heard Dennard’s claims about the arrest. According to Rapoport, Dennard twice took a breathalyzer test and the results showed he was below the legal limit, meaning he was not guilty of driving while under the influence. However, the “officer told [Dennard] he hadn’t blown hard enough, thus the did not comply designation.” From what I’ve been told, not blowing hard enough during a breathalyzer test messes with the results and can constitute as a refusal to take the test. Rapoport added that Dennard was not asked to take a blood test but did pass a field sobriety test. “He took a field sobriety test, was told it did not indicate inebriation,” Rapoport tweeted. “His report says he took [a field sobriety test], not that he failed it.” It’ll be interesting to see what comes out of the arrest given the conflicting claims surrounding the incident. Off-the-field issues are no stranger to Dennard, who was arrested just over a year ago for punching a police officer in the face at a Lincoln bar. He was convicted in February and received two years of probation, a 30-day jail sentence and 100 hours of community. The youngster’s issues were a big reason he dropped all the way to the seventh round in the 2012 NFL Draf despite an impressive four-year career at Nebraska. The Patriots selected Dennard 224th overall and the defensive back was solid for the Pats in his rookie year, starting six games and recording three interceptions.
