It looks like Darrelle Revis is paying the price to keep his #24 in Tampa Bay. (AP Photo) Revis Island appears to be settling in well in Tampa Bay. While Darrelle Revis could never seem to avoid contract disputes with the New York Jets, he found a home when he was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the draft back in April. Revis promptly signed for 6 years and $96 million, and surprisingly the deal included zero guaranteed dollars. The next item of business was getting Revis’ notable number 24 jersey to Tampa. The only problem was that that number had already been taken by second-year safety Mark Barron. According to a report from Uniwatch.com’s Paul Lukas, the jersey number was worth $50,000 to Revis. A well-placed source tells me that the amount Darrelle Revis paid to Mark Barron in order to get Barron to give up No. 24 was — get this — $50,000. Is that a record? After signing a deal for almost $100 million and getting about $60 million more over his years with the Jets, I don’t think $50,000 is more than pocket change for Mr. Revis. As for Barron, he wore number 4 at Alabama, but 34 and 44 are already taken on the Bucs roster (by running back Michael Smith and linebacker Ka’Lial Glaud, respectively). ESPN has him listed as number 23, so it appears the loss was minimal for the safety. This should be a good sign, as the secondary needs to get along well in Tampa Bay. Between Revis, Barron, and free agent acquisition Dashon Goldson, the talent is there, and things are looking up after the Bucs ranked dead last in passing defense last year.
