Per a report from Kevin Patra of NFL.com, Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller has stated he will forgo his signature sack celebration, “the DeSoto Shuffle,” and instead use Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s “Superman” touchdown celebration. Miller and Newton were drafted #1 and #2 in the 2011 NFL Draft, and both had incredible rookie years, each garnering Defensive and Offensive Rookie Year of the Honors. respectively. Miller has a good shot to make good on his word; after a rookie campaign that notched 11.5 sacks, he has nine this year, and is going up against a Carolina Panthers offensive line that has struggled for much of the year. To date, the Panthers line has allowed 16 sacks, 16 quarterback hits, and 63 quarterback hurries.  It could be a long day for Newton has he looks at a Broncos hungry pass rush looking to make of an impact for their team. Miller stated he would not being doing it as a sign of disrespect to Newton, but as a sign of admiration. However, the NFL is littered with examples of players who deliberately use another player’s signature celebration move as a sign of mocking them. Last year, Detroit Lions defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh mocked Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ “Championship Belt” celebration after sacking him. Another Lion, Stephen Tulloch “Tebow’d” after sacking then-Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow. Whatever Miller’s intent, it is not often that the imitation is construed as a sign of respect; more often, it appears to be a sign of mocking an opponent during a dominating play or performance.
