Washington-redskins
Just kidding, but I gotcha didn’t I? In all actuality, this may be a headline in the Chicago Tribune in the near future. As addressed by NFL.com’s Around the League writer Kevin Patra, Rex Grossman may well be the Bears’ best bet at a steady, ready-to-start quarterback to serve as the No. 2 QB on the roster. With Jay Cutler starting for the next three years minimum, the Bears have their hands tied because they absolutely have to have a quality back-up. Cutler has not played a full season since 2009. Carson Palmer’s Little Bro? With Josh McCown departing to Lovie Smith’s Buccaneers, the Bears have no quality back-up at the position. Jordan Palmer, the club’s number three quarterback has been on-and-off the roster time and again, showing capability in preseason yet returning to his day job as quarterbacks coach at EXOS, a draft training center for the NFL in California. This has been a recurring role for the younger Palmer brother, he served in the same capacity for the Washington Redskins, Cincinnati Bengals and Jacksonville Jaguars prior to the Bears. Jordan has only thrown 15 NFL passes. The Number One Job of the Number Two Guy Marc Trestman expressed what he wishes for in his backup quarterback at the NFL Annual Meeting on the 25th of march stating, “The No. 1 job of the No. 2 quarterback is to be ready to play and to play well… The best term is he has to go in and play efficiently. He can’t turn the ball over. He’s got to live for the next play.” – Chicago Tribune No One Left on the Market Sounds good in theory, but Mike Vick, Mark Sanchez, Matt Cassel and Jason Campbell all signed with other teams, the Bears should be scrambling to sign someone. Shaun Hill is also off the market, so the list of free agent quarterbacks is quickly shrinking. The defense still needs an upgrade and the only realistic options besides using a draft pick are the aging David Garrard, the young Josh Freeman and Rex Grossman. A few other names out there, but are most likely too expensive or just a not the right fit: Jimmy Clausen, Matt Flynn, Kevin Kolb, Colt McCoy, Dan Orlovksy, Curtis Painter, Brady Quinn, Rusty Smith and Seneca Wallace. Don’t Egg His House Yet Rex Grossman was a good quarterback at times with the Bears and under the quarterback whisperer even journeyman backup Josh McCown excelled and is off to compete for a starting job. Grossman, the last Bears quarterback to lead the team to a Super Bowl, would be a knowledgeable, experienced and capable understudy to back up Smokin’ Jay and assist the quarterback from the sideline.   ———— Source(s): NFL.com, Chicagotribune.com Follow @sportsmockery for the latest in Chicago Bears free agency moves.
