So it looks like there will be new referees this weekend, or old refs if you prefer, for the Saints @ Packers game on Sunday. That's right, a deal with both sides appears complete and it will mean a return to the normal refs for as soon as this week's games. Too bad the Saints won't get a free win, then, because Packers' offensive lineman T.J. Lang suggested they were considering taking a knee on every down. Perhaps that's poor sportsmanship on my part to want to take advantage of an opponent who may give you the win and not try, but at this point I am that desperate for a win and I'm that convinced that anything that remotely resembles minimal effort will result in a Packers blowout win. That said, I was told "I have word from one of the Saints offensive leaders that they are thinking the same thing", so of course the team is so bad right now they couldn't even manage a win against someone kneeling on every play. I kid, I kid.So now we'll h...

Payton's absence shows a coach's value

When the bounty suspensions were handed down by Roger Goodell this summer and the New Orleans Saints found out they were going to be without head coach Sean Payton for the season -- and without assistant head coach (and obvious choice for interim coach) Joe Vitt for the first six games -- I promise you that more than a few of the Saints players thought, "No problem." That...

Not used to losing, Saints search for answers

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- This is new territory for quarterback Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints. Super Bowl champions just 31 months ago, the Saints are now a mess. Their head coach is suspended for the entire season. Their interim head coach is suspended until Week 7, and their interim interim head coach has led them to a 0-3 record. Traveling to Lambeau Field this Sunday, it'...

Saints insist stats belie defensive improvement

Cam Jordan refuses to let the New Orleans Saints' dreadful defensive statistical rankings get him down. He sees no evidence that his defensive teammates are discouraged, either. ''That hasn't happened yet,'' said Jordan, a second-year defensive end. ''It definitely has not happened. If anything, everyone's re-energized and the effort is on bettering...

Saints RB Chris Ivory Won't Replace Mark Ingram In Backfield

An 0-3 start and an inconsistent ground game have not convinced Saints interim coach Aaron Kromer to change running backs. He confirmed after practice Thursday that former first-round draft pick Mark Ingram, the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner, will remain active this Sunday while Chris Ivory sits out his fourth straight game. Ingram has rushed 27 times for 79 yards (2.9 average)...

Mike Tanier on Brees vs. Unitas

Mike Tanier has a nice piece on Drew Brees, Dan Marino, and Johnny Unitas: We should, of course, cherish the memories of Unitas and other legends. But we cannot do so at the expense of the present. Drew Brees is an all-time great at his prime. We must appreciate him while we have him. Every time we lapse into nostalgia, it’s a backhanded insult to a legacy that is still growing.

Saints stumbling through tough time

A street performer covered from head to toe in sparkling paint sits atop a garbage can on Bourbon Street. Above his battered tip bucket is a cardboard sign that reads, "To NFL Roger Goodell." The "Gold Man" then sends his message for the cameras with a middle-finger salute -- and he says business has never been better. Not far from New Orleans Saints headquarters...

Saints Nation: New Poll!

I've had the same poll up on the left hand side of the blog forever, so it's time for a new one. My previous question was regarding the Saints' new free agents, and which you were most excited about. Curtis Lofton landed 70.6% of the vote, so you the fans clearly picked him as the guy you were most excited about. And sure enough, he's the only that's really lived...

Packers, Saints struggles: Return of the defense?

The New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers have been two of the NFC’s best for the past 3 years and have had some of the most explosive offenses in history, largely due to the play of their all-pro QBs, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. This year, the pass-happy offenses that lit up the league [...] [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]
