Packer fans can exhale now; Sam Shields is back. Shields, arguably Ted Thompson’s most impressive non-drafted free agent signing, will be in Green Bay for at least another four seasons. Shields was supposedly set to test free agency when the signing period starts on Tuesday, but the Packers decided to not risk letting him slip through their fingers. Shields’ contract is worth $39 million dollars and he was given a $12.5 million dollar signing bonus. The contract is front loaded and guarantees Shields $21 million dollars over the first two years. Given Shields production, ability, and constant improvement, this deal is a steal and likely raises the bar for cornerbacks in free agency. While much more expensive than originally anticipated, this contract is still structured well and should help the Packers conserve money down the line. On top of that, the Packers still have a lot of cap space left and by re-signing Shields now have less potential needs to fill. Luckily this contract isn’t too pricey – expect the Packers to sign a few more key pieces before the draft. To see the Weekly Rewind, CLICK HERE.
